The incident occurred at a University in West Bengal and made headlines after days when a person present at the occasion took the video and shared it online. The 'classroom wedding' has led to an official inquiry. At the same time, the idea of a female professor marrying her student in class has drawn mixed reactions from netizens. The viral video of the classroom wedding features Dr. Priya Banerjee, a former head of applied psychology at MAKAUT, dressed in bridal attire. She is seen marrying her first-year student, dressed in a green sweatshirt amid other students and faculty members at Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT). The student was seen applying sindoor on his teacher and everyone congratulated them in the video.
Later, Priya revealed that the wedding was a play for a college event and a special e-invite was even made for the wedding. Moreover, pre-wedding rituals like a haldi ceremony, mehndi, and sangeet were organised between January 14, 2025 to January 19, 2025 and all this has raised ethical concerns in the University. Some news portals alleged that the student is not of legal marriageable age, adding more severity to the issues. Soon, the university formed a five-member inquiry committee to investigate it, and the professor was asked to go on leave until the committee prepared a report.
When the 'classroom wedding' video went viral, several netizens took to the comment section to express their anger. One user wrote, "The society has gone into chaos," while another penned, "What will be the investigation about this again? Is the boy married for the business to get more marks?"
After the viral video gained criticism, Dr. Priya revealed that the play was supposed to be a 'psychodrama' for educational reasons. She added that everyone, including the students and faculty, knew about it. At the same time, she alleged that someone was trying to harm her reputation through the incident. But, the university's teachers' union has already filed a complaint over the incident, calling it 'inappropriate'. Also, some teachers mentioned the act wasn't required and highlighted what was the need for a university letterhead with everyone's signature announcing them as husband and wife.
