Virat Kohli exposes controversial Delhi cricket selection processes that highlighted money over merit

In a viral video, Kohli opened up to Dinesh Karthik about the controversial happenings in Delhi cricket. Virat Kohli shared a memory from his past when he had a chance to join the under-14 Delhi team but got removed late at night due to some issues in the selection process at the state level. He mentioned that another player was chosen over him, possibly due to favors offered elsewhere. Virat Kohli's integrity shines through in his recollection of the controversial Delhi cricket selection process.

Similarly, his late father, Prem Nath Kohli was approached with an option suggesting that if he paid after two matches Virat could be back, in the team. His dad declined the offer and firmly expressed that he wouldn't spend a dime to guarantee his sons spot in the team. He believed that if Kohli could make it based on his skills; If not then it simply wasn't meant to be, for him. Kohli said:

"There was a time in my life where there was an opportunity, I was selected for under-14 Delhi team and then I was dropped at 1 am because of some complications and you know how and what happens at state levels. Someone was preferred over me because of some compensations that were done and stuff like that. Same was offered to my father as well, that if you can, maybe he can get into the team after two games. My father straightaway said, 'I'm not going to pay a single penny to make him play. If he can play on his talent, so be it, if not, it's not meant to be for him.' So that stuck with me."

Virat Kohli scored 90 runs for Delhi in the Ranji Trophy a day after his father’s death

Unfortunately, In a twist of fate Virat Kohli ended up representing Delhi in cricket matches. One of his standout performances in the Ranji Trophy was in December 2006, when he made 90 runs against Karnataka a day  after his father passed away. This performance garnered him admiration, showcasing his resilience and unwavering commitment to the sport.

Even though Kohli has now transitioned to a career in cricket. His early performances in the Ranji Trophy set the stage for his development as a player. Kohli last participated in a Ranji Trophy match for the Delhi team in 2012 in Ghaziabad against Uttar Pradesh.
