Vivek Oberoi recently opened up about his marriage with Priyanka Alva, which has gone strong for over a decade. He shared his thoughts on how the bond can change over time, and more.
Vivek Oberoi defied all odds and found true love in an arranged marriage with his wife, Priyanka Alva. The actor-turned-businessman is known for gushing about his ladylove whenever he gets a chance, and their filmy-style first meeting is a tale as old as time now. From believing he would stay single for the rest of his life to falling for Priyanka the first time they met, Vivek has undoubtedly come a long way. Having spent 14 years with the woman of his dreams, Vivek has now opened up about his thoughts on marriage, how it changes over time, and the key to maintaining a healthy bond.
If there's anyone who knows how to get the girls wishing they could find a husband like him, it's Vivek Oberoi. In a recent interview with MensXP, the actor-businessman left us swooning when he stated that he has been in love with his wife 'for the last 14 years.' Vivek elaborated on how he liked to make Priyanka feel loved, recounting how he admires her as she applies her makeup. When she caught him doing that, it was a 'different kind of romantic' according to Vivek.
Vivek also discussed the many ways a marriage changes over time. He revealed that when he was young, he was all about 'grand gestures.' However, after spending so many years together and having kids, he had started favouring little gestures. Recounting one particularly big gesture he made, Vivek narrated:
"When I proposed to Priyanka before our wedding, she had gone to Florence for shopping. I landed up without telling her, set the whole stage, dress, shoes, jewellery for her and left a note, 'meet me on the bridge across forever'. This is where we first met. She dressed up and walked down and she was welcomed with music and then she saw a carriage and she met me and we spent the whole evening in that carriage. I was dressed in a tuxedo with a ring and then wrote a poem for her. But, this you can't keep doing every time. So here is when the small gestures come in place to express that you still love and care."
Vivek Oberoi then shed some light on how the marriage and bond between parents affected their kids. He stated that kids, being observant, would pick on the energy of their mother and father and learn from them. Thus, how parents behave with each other sets the 'blueprint of how a relationship looks.' According to Vivek, if kids observed their parents being respectful and lovingly correcting each other's mistakes, they would aspire for a similar relationship. Likewise, if they were to see parents misbehaving with each other, they would assume that a relationship was meant to be like that.
Vivek Oberoi also discussed the concept of open marriages during the interview with MensXP, firmly stating that he didn't understand the concept. Stating that there was no such thing as 'open exclusivity,' the actor said:
"Either you are exclusive or you are nothing, there cannot be anything like open exclusivity. I think I am a typical Punjabi guy. Maybe not made for this culture or maybe not as liberal. I am very desi. There is a reason people have been following an exclusive relationship for ages."
Vivek added further that the commitment between him and Priyanka was very different. Talking about how liberated he felt being in a relationship with the woman he would choose in every lifetime, Vivek said:
"In fourteen years of marriage, I look at her every day and ask myself, 'Among all the woman in the universe, would I still choose her?' and the answer is yes, I will still choose her. It is the most liberating feeling because you are in it because you want to not because you have to."
Vivek considered himself lucky that his beloved wife only demanded his time. He also gushed about how adorably excited she was whenever they went out together. Vivek revealed that Priyanka never really cared about 'expensive stuff,' and this made him feel fortunate because her genuine happiness lay in spending time with him.
