Waheeda Rehman’s illustrious film career

Born in 1938, Waheeda belonged to a Deccani Muslim family in the state of Tamil Nadu, and was the youngest among her other 3 sisters. Along with her sisters, she was duly trained in the art of Bharatnatyam. However, Waheeda’s scope of the dream was not even an inch closer to cinema, as she always wanted to become a doctor. However, post her father’s early death and subsequently, her mother also falling ill, Waheeda had to abandon her dreams and step into the glamour world. While her initial Tamil film projects did not give her massive success, it was only after she started collaborating with Dev Anand and Guru Dutt that her career flourished magnanimously.

When Waheeda recalled a filmmaker cancelling a shoot since she refused to wear revealing clothes

In a previous interview with Radio Nasha, Waheeda Rehman opened up on an unknown anecdote from the shooting of her film, Solva Saal, where, in a particular scene, her character’s clothes were soaking wet and she was supposed to change them. However, Waheeda mentioned that she did not like the kind of clothes she was given, since they were too revealing, she chose to wear an outfit that made her comfortable, and came out. Sharing how it angered the filmmaker, to the extent that he called for a pack up of the shoot, Waheeda mentioned:

“I was given a costume that I did not want to wear. The director said if you are not comfortable then don’t wear it but when you come on the set, you should be happy. So when I came on the set, I wore what made me comfortable. The director was furious. He said this your second or third movie, and it will be your last one because you have too many conditions. The director was so angry that he packed up for the day.”
