Ameesha Patel was one of the most promising actresses of Bollywood in the early 2000s. But what led to her fall? Read on to know more.
The one name that garnered a lot of attention along with Hrithik Roshan after the release of the film, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai was Ameesha Patel. Her amazing screen presence in her sensational debut film tagged her as the next big thing in Bollywood. Fans and critics loved Ameesha’s performance in Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, which was followed by the blockbuster film, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.
After some time, Ameesha’s films like Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage, Kranti, Yeh Hai Jalwa, Mangal Pandey: The Rising and Thoda Pyaar, Thoda Magic started to flop at the box office. She saw a low phase from the year 2003, which lasted till 2007. She was also seen in multi-starrers like Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, where her presence was hardly felt.
The actress with the most blockbuster beginning to her career suddenly vanished from the limelight. But what exactly led to Ameesha’s downfall? Let us read on to know more about it.
It was during the making of Mohan Kumar’s film, Aap Mujhe Achhe Lagne Lage, that Ameesha started developing feelings for Vikram Bhatt, who was already a married man. The alleged affair between Ameesha and Vikram had put the actress in a bad light, and she was also tagged as a homebreaker. Then suddenly, an English newspaper published the news about Ameesha’s marriage to Vikram along with their picture.
Since the gossip about the alleged affair was already there, the news about their marriage broke all the hell. Producers and directors, who signed the actress, panicked, and the news also became a matter of clash between Ameesha and her family.
They dated for a total of five years and were never a media-shy couple. Other than making lots of public appearances together, Vikram Bhatt once, in an interview, candidly spoke about his relationship with Ameesha and mentioned:
“At this point of time she’s chasing her career, and I’m chasing her. I’m ready whenever she is. This relationship is for keeps. But I don’t want to say much. In the past I’ve been terribly hurt after taking a relationship to my heart”.
As the news of Ameesha and Vikram’s affair began, her mom got annoyed. There were rumours about Ameesha living with Vikram, after which the actress’ relationship with her mom soured. As per multiple sources, Ameesha’s mom was worried whether the actress would get married to Vikram as she reportedly didn’t want her daughter to get married before settling her brother, Ashmit Patel in Bollywood.
Ameesha Patel’s father, Amit Patel, used to manage all her money as he was her manager too. However, when Amit faced losses in his business, he used his daughter, Ameesha’s hard-earned money from films to restart his business. When Ameesha sought her tax papers from him, he failed to provide all the information pertaining to her accounts, which certainly made the actress upset.
After Amit Patel duped his daughter, Ameesha, the actress claimed that she didn’t possess a single penny. She left her parent’s home and sued her father for Rs. 12 crores and demanded her money back. In response, Ameesha’s parents had apparently also dragged in her then-beau, Vikram Bhatt, who, in his defence, had frankly claimed to be supportive of Ameesha in her fight. In one of her interviews with the Hindustan Times, Ameesha defended her move and mentioned that she did not feel ashamed of channelling a legal route against her own parents. She had mentioned:
“Why should I feel ashamed? My money belongs to no one but me and not even my parents have the right to take it away.”
Everything was going smoothly in Ameesha and Vikram’s life when the couple suddenly called it quits. It was Ameesha’s battle with her parents, which led to her fallout with Vikram. It affected their time and space together, and they thought it was better to move apart. Spilling beans on the same, Vikram had once mentioned:
“I don’t think we ever loved each other. Ameesha had problems of her own with her parents and we both shared a period of our lives where we were going through a low phase in our career. We now realize that actually, we were just good friends who mistook it for love. We still remain friends. She is a lovely girl and I only wish good things for her”.
Despite her absence from the silver screen, Ameesha Patel made a blockbuster comeback in 2023 with the film, Gadar 2. The film not only proved to be a superhit but also more than 600 crores in India, making it the highest-grossing Hindi film.
