In an old interview, Neena Gupta had recalled the time when she was called a bad girl in her college days and revealed the reason behind the same. Check it out!
Veteran actress, Neena Gupta, is a strong woman, who dared to break several stereotypes of society has always been ahead of her time. She had made a name for herself in the film industry with the critically acclaimed film, Woh Chokri, for which she had bagged a National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. Later, she had made a resurgence in her career in 2018 when she had played the lead in the comic drama, Badhaai Ho, at the age of 59. Just like her career, Neena's personal life, too, had a lot of ups and downs.
For the unversed, it was in the '80s when Neena Gupta had met West Indian cricketer, Vivian Richards in Mumbai. After multiple meetings, Neena and Vivian had fallen in love with each other. When Neena was pregnant and a wedding with Vivian wasn't possible, as he was already married, Neena had taken the bold step to give birth to their daughter. And, the strong lady that Neena is, had raised her daughter, Masaba, as a single mommy.

In a candid conversation with Brut India, Neena Gupta had opened up about why she was called a bad girl in her college days. The actress had revealed that she was too stylish and fashionable, which had made people think that she was not a nice girl. She had also talked about her mother's reaction to the same and had said:
"In college, they didn't like me because they thought I looked too modern and too stylish and was not a nice girl. I was a bad girl because I was too stylish. I have been styling myself for ages. Earlier, we didn't have much money so we used to style with whatever we had. I was very fashionable actually. And, my mother was totally like she never wore any jewellery. She was very simple. And she used to say, 'My daughter was exchanged at the hospital. You are not my daughter because you are too interested in dressing up.'"
Neena Gupta doesn't believe in mincing her words. A few weeks back, the actress had bashed trollers for judging a woman on her choice of clothes. She had taken to her IG handle and had posted a video of herself, where she was seen donning a grey-coloured dress with a plunging neckline. In the video, Neena had bashed trollers for targeting women wearing sexy clothes. She could be heard saying in Hindi:
"Mujhe ye isliye post karna hai kyunki aisa lagta hai ki jo log aise sexy type kapde pahante hain, jaise ki maine abhi pahne hai – wo aise hi hote hain, bekar ke. Lekin main bata du ki maine Sanskrit mein MPhil ki hui hai, aur bhi bahut kujh kia hua hai. To kapde dekh ke kisi ko judge nahi karna. Troll karne walo samajh lo."

Neena has always been a fighter since her childhood. From witnessing her father's second marriage to her mother attempting suicide, Neena's life has always been a bed of thorns. In one of the chapters of her autobiography, Sach Kahun Toh, Neena had revealed how she was molested multiple times during her childhood. In one of the chapters of her autobiography, Neena had shared the details of how she was molested and had also revealed why she had never dared to tell her mother about the same. She had written: "The doctor started by examining my eye and then went down to check out other areas that were unconnected with my eye. I was scared stiff while it was happening and felt disgusted all the way home. I sat in a corner in the house and cried my eyes out when nobody was looking. But I didn’t dare tell my mother about this because I was so scared that she would say that it was my fault. That I had probably said or done something to provoke him. This happened to me many times at the doctor’s."
Neena Gupta is a sassy lady, who time and again, has broken stereotypes, without paying heed to societal norms and expectations. From brilliantly raising her daughter, Masaba Gupta as a single mother to marrying a Delhi-based Chartered Accountant, Vivek Mehra at the age of 50, Neena has always been ahead of her times. Despite facing the wrath of trolls, Neena had started her beautiful married life, and they are still going strong to this day.
