When Pritish Nandy 'Stole' Masaba Gupta's Birth Certificate, Leaked Her Identity: 'He Sent Somebody'

Renowned journalist, poet laureate, parliamentarian and filmmaker, Pritish Nandy took his last breath on January 8, 2025, at the age of 73, after suffering cardiac arrest at his home. While his demise came as a shock to the industry, with close friends leaving heartfelt tributes, not everyone feels the same way. The producer was in a longstanding feud with veteran actress, Neena Gupta, who has repeatedly expressed her hatred for Pritish for his controversial actions.

Neena Gupta revealed the shocking theft of Masaba’s birth certificate from the registrar

Neena Gupta, often adored for her bold choices and resilience, has faced life's challenges with grace. From raising her daughter, Masaba single-handedly to defying norms at 65, she remains unfazed by societal prejudices. However, having a child out of wedlock came with its share of consequences, one of them being the constant moral policing directed towards her by media houses. Nevertheless, it was Pritish Nandy who crossed all limits and stole Masaba’s birth certificate to disclose her identity to the public.

In an old interview with journalist, Rajdeep Sardesai, Neena Gupta recounted how Pritish Nandy, then a renowned journalist, allegedly orchestrated the theft of Masaba’s birth certificate. In the aftermath of the incident, Neena did not mince words. She openly called Pritish Nandy a ‘bastard’ for his actions. This bold statement even made it to public hoardings. Neena was heard saying:

“He stole my birth certificate from the registrar’s office. And I called him a bastard! It was on the hoardings… He went and stole! Pritish Nandy!”

Recalling how Pritish orchestrated his plan, Neena shared that the journalist hid his identity, pretended to be a family relative, and acquired Masaba’s birth certificate from the hospital’s registrar. She said in the interview:

“He (Pritish) sent somebody. So my bua, I was living with my bua, so she went and she submitted. They said, ‘Come after one week, we’ll give you the birth certificate’. So she went after one week and they said, ‘Wo toh le gaye aapke koi rishtedaar.’ By chance, I knew somebody who knew that person, usse pata chala ke he sent somebody and then he wrote an article. Wo pade likhe log karte hai toh tumhara toh kya bolenge.”

Masaba Gupta was branded as a ‘love child’ as she grew up

The birth certificate that Pritish Nandy stole was published in a magazine shortly after Masaba’s birth in 1989, sparking widespread media frenzy. The document, which Neena had intended to keep private, revealed the identity of Masaba’s father, West Indian cricketer, Vivian Richards. In 2008, Neena married Delhi-based Chartered Accountant, Vivek Mishra at the age of 49. As Masaba grew older, she gradually got branded as a ‘love child’, as she was conceived out of wedlock.

Pritish Nandy’s passing and Neena’s ‘No RIP’ comment

Pritish Nandy’s recent demise at the age of 73 has stirred mixed reactions. While his close friend, Anupam Kher penned a heartfelt tribute for the departed producer, Neena Gupta made headlines with a shocking comment that read:

“Do you know, what he did to me, and I called him a bastard openly. He stole my baby's birth certificate and published it. So no RIP, you understand, and I have proof of it.”
