In 83 years of his life, business tycoon, Ratan Tata never found the woman with whom he wants to build a life. However, Ratan might have tied the knot
Ratan Tata is a name that needs no introduction. Industrialist, business tycoon, former chairman of Tata Sons, and philanthropist, Ratan has held several roles in his lifetime. The ease with which he slides into these different positions, even at the age of 83, has left a lasting impression on people. However, there is one role the revered businessman never got to experience, and that is of a doting husband.
Ratan Tata never had the opportunity to hear wedding bells, but that doesn’t mean he never experienced love. The business mogul revealed that as a youngster working in LA, he found the woman of his dreams. However, when he moved back to India to spend some time with his ailing grandma, fate decided to take a different course. In his words:
“After college, I landed a job at an architecture firm in LA, where I worked for two years. It was a beautiful time. The weather was beautiful, I had my own car, and I loved my job. It was in LA that I fell in love and almost got married. But at the same time, I had made the decision to move back at least temporarily since I had been away from my grandmother who wasn’t keeping too well for almost 7 years.”
Before the big move, Ratan Tata had been confident that he would marry his true love. So, he came back to the US to pay her a visit and take her back to India. However, things didn’t go like he planned. He told Humans of Bombay:
“So I came back to visit her and thought that the person I wanted to marry would come to India with me, but because of the Indo-China war, her parents weren’t okay with her moving anymore, and the relationship fell apart.”
Despite experiencing heartbreak, Ratan Tata didn’t give up on love. He had other relationships, but the industry giant was never able to find his partner in crime for life. Ratan confessed to Simi:
“There are many times I feel lonely for not having a wife or family. There was a whole series of things, timing, my absorption in work. There were many things, I came close to getting married a few times and it didn’t work out.”
At the age of 10, Ratan Tata had to come to terms with his parents splitting up. While Ratan still describes his childhood as “happy”, he admitted to Humans of Bombay that he did struggle with his parents’ divorce.
His pain was only intensified when his peers started mocking him about his parents' divorce. Elaborating on what his experience was like, he said:
“I had a happy childhood, but as my brother and I got older, we faced a fair bit of ragging and personal discomfort because of our parent’s divorce, which in those days wasn’t as common as it is today. But my grandmother brought us up in every way. Soon after when my mother remarried, the boys at school started saying all kinds of things about us -- constantly and aggressively. But our grandmother taught us to retain dignity at all costs, a value that’s stayed with me until today. It involved walking away from these situations, which otherwise we would have fought back against.”
