Recent reports claim that the late Queen Elizabeth II was furious when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan Markle, named their daughter Lilibet to honour the queen.

Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning monarch in the history of the British Royal family. She ascended the throne in 1952 and has ruled over Britain and Commonwealth nations till September 2022. At present, a new book titled, Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story by the Royal biographer, Robert Hardman shared details of the royal family after the death of Queen Elizabeth.

The book vividly recounts the moment when King Charles was informed about the death of his mother. As per the book, he was on his way back to Balmoral Castle when he received the news that his mother, Queen Elizabeth, had left for her heavenly abode. The book also describes the last moments of the Queen, which were reportedly very peaceful. As per a memo written by her private secretary, the Queen passed away in her sleep.

The late Queen Elizabeth II was furious when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle named their daughter, Lilibet

New details have come to the limelight from Robert Hardman’s book, which claimed that the late Queen was upset when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle named their secondborn Lilibet. For the unversed, the name Lilibet was given to Queen Elizabeth II by her father, King George VI, and later was used by her husband, Prince Philip, and other close family members and friends as her pet name.

In 2021, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced the birth of their daughter and mentioned in a statement that they decided to call their newborn Lilibet, to honour the Queen. Recently, an insider has said, as quoted in the book, that the late Queen was “as angry as I'd ever seen her”, and further added what Elizabeth II had said:

“I don't own the palaces, I don't own the paintings, the only thing I own is my name. And now they've taken that.”

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle never got approval from Queen Elizabeth II to use her name

In 2021, it was reported that the Queen approved Harry and Meghan naming their daughter after her. But recent reports suggest that the couple never consulted the late Queen Elizabeth before they announced their daughter’s name to the public. The book, which is currently being serialised in the Daily Mail, claims that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were turned down by Buckingham Palace when they requested support for their claim publicly.

Shortly after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their daughter's name as Lilibet, the BBC reported a palace source saying that the Queen "was not asked by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex about naming their daughter Lilibet". As a consequence, the couple accused the broadcasters of libel, which is a false statement published to defame someone. However, according to Robert Hardman, the threat of legal action against the BBC never came into being, and the case was dropped. Back then, a spokesperson of Harry and Meghan said:

“The duke spoke with his family in advance of the announcement, in fact, his grandmother was the first family member he called. During that conversation, he shared their hope of naming their daughter Lilibet in her honour. Had she not been supportive, they would not have used the name.”
