Yash Chopra introduced the world to some of the greatest talents in the entertainment industry. The filmmaker turned several careers around with just one film. These actors included Anushka Sharma, Arjun Kapoor and Poonam Dhillon, to name a few. However, amongst the several actors that the legendary director introduced to the film fraternity, there’s one actress who captivated the audience with her bold and charming personality. Sonam Khan was one of the most popular actresses from the '90s, and she left her mark in the glamorous industry.
Sonam Khan made her debut in the B-Town with Vijay in 1988. She starred alongside the legendary actors Rajesh Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Hema Malini and Anil Kapoor. Sonam is well known for her stellar roles in films like Ajooba and Tridev. She is also lauded for her timeless songs, like Tirchi Topiwale, which continue to be a fan favourite.
In November 2024, Sonam Khan shared a couple of throwback pictures from a shoot that landed her in deep trouble with her parents. The actress, who was known for her rebellious nature did a bold photoshoot. In the pictures, she exuded an intense and bold vibe while she struck a pose amidst the bushes. However, when the pictures were published in the magazine, her mother was livid and slapped Sonam. The actress revealed that her mother was so mad that she even tore the magazine. She shared:
"When I got a tight slap! I thought I was gonna look great and was wearing a skin colour short dress which was hidden by the tall grass around. So when the images came out, my mom came with the magazine, gave me a tight slap and tore the magazine up. I may have been bold at that time, but my parents were always very protective of me. Nonetheless, I was always a rebel with a cause. At least that’s what I thought!”
For the unversed, Sonam Khan was born Bakhtavar Khan. The actress embraced the screen name, Sonam, at the suggestion of the remarkable filmmaker, Yash Chopra. The rebellious actress was the granddaughter of the veteran actor, Murad and bhanji of Raza Murad. Vijay was just the starting point for the actress as she starred in numerous hit films during her career. Some of Sonam's greatest roles included her role as 'Renuka' in the 1989 action thriller, Tridev, followed by her double role as 'Anupama' and 'Neelima' in director, Shiv Kumar's Mitti Aur Sona. In the year 1990, she wowed the audience with her role as 'Sonu' in Sunny Deol and Sanjay Dutt starrer, Kroadh.
Sonam Khan married director, Rajiv Rai in 1991. Soon after her marriage, the actress decided to bid adieu to her acting career to focus on her family. The couple eventually settled in Europe. However, their fairytale was short-lived as, in 2001, they decided to separate, and in 2016, they were officially divorced. Sonam moved back to India in 2023 and made her first public appearance at Mumbai’s Jio World Plaza. If the reports are to be believed, the actress is currently living in Mumbai with her son.
