Honey Singh met his first wife, Shalini Talwar, in Karampura, Delhi. They met at a tuition in 2001. She was in 12th class while he was preparing for his B.Sc. After ten years of dating each other, the couple tied the knot on January 23, 2011. When Honey Singh became a rage, he never openly admitted that he was married until he introduced his wife, Shalini, on his show, India's Raw Star.
Shalini Talwar was born in 1987 in Delhi. She studied at Guru Nanak Public School in Punjabi Bagh, New Delhi. Later, she tried her hands at modelling. Shalini even made a cameo in the 2004 film, Run alongside Abhishek Bachchan and Bhumika Chawla.
In 2022, Honey Singh's wife, Shalini, filed a plea in Delhi's Tis Hazari court against the singer. Shalini accused her husband of domestic violence, sexual violence, mental harassment and financial fraud. In her plea, Shalini claimed that Honey Singh was brash and disrespectful towards her, and she disclosed one incident from their honeymoon when the rapper had left her all alone in the hotel room, only to return intoxicated. Narrating the incident, Shalini said:
"Honey Singh went out of the Hotel room and did not come back for 10-12 hours and the Applicant having no idea about the new place that she was in, remained in the room anxious and waiting for him to come back. Honey Singh came back late at night and was extremely intoxicated."
Not only this, Shalini even accused Honey Singh's father of touching her inappropriately. Shalini revealed how her father-in-law once entered her room while she was changing her clothes, and in a drunken state, he casually touched her chest. She also accused her husband, Honey Singh, of having multiple affairs and indulging in casual sex with them.
According to media reports, Shalini had demanded Rs. 10 crore as alimony. However, in 2023, the ex-couple parted ways, and reports were rife that Honey Singh had given Shalini Rs. 1 crore to settle the case. But in an interview with Lallantop, Honey Singh claimed that he had spent more than the amount quoted by the media. Honey Singh also revealed that he and his wife, Shalini, had signed a document wherein they agreed that they would not talk about each other in public.
Earlier, in an interview with The Lallantop, Honey Singh accepted that he neglected his wife, Shalini, during their marital years. The relationship suffered despite them being together since their childhood. He said:
"Our relationship wasn't very good at that time. There was distance between us because I was travelling a lot. For the initial 9–10 months of our marriage, things were good. But then success and fame got to my head. When that happened, I neglected my family and had completely lost myself in money, fame, addiction, and women. I did terrible things. I almost left Shalini and forgot about them (family)."
Honey Singh never shied away from expressing his mistakes and the love he once had with his ex-wife, Shalini. But being a man of his word, he never once talked ill about his ex-wife in the media.
