Zakir Hussain, The Majestic Tabla Whizz Dies At The Age Of 73 After Hospitalisation In San Francisco

Zakir Hussain has left a huge gap in the musical world after his demise at the age of 73. It was reported that the infamous tabla maestro was admitted to the hospital in a serious condition.

The majestic tabla maestro and composer, Ustad Zakir Hussain left fans and admirers deeply concerned when the report of his hospitalisation due to serious health issues surfaced on the internet. The legendary musician is the son of the iconic tabla genius, Ustad Allah Rakha, who was admitted to a hospital in San Francisco, USA. The 73-year-old musician was being treated there.

Legendary tabla player, Zakir Hussain passes away at the age of 73

On December 15, 2024, journalist, Pervaiz Alam took to his X (Twitter) and shared the saddening news. He revealed that Zakir Hussain’s brother-in-law, Ayub Aulia, had confirmed the tabla maestro's hospitalisation over a phone call. Aulia, who is based in London, had requested fans and followers to keep Zakir in their prayers and wish for his speedy recovery. However, later, on the same day, it was reported that the legend had bid adieu to the world. Pervaiz Alam had tweeted: 

"Ustad Zakir Hussain, Tabla player, percussionist, composer, former actor and the son of legendary Tabla player,  Ustad Allah Rakha is not well. He’s being treated for serious ailments in a San Francisco hospital, USA, informed his brother in law, Ayub Aulia in a phone call with me. Aulia sahab, based in London, has requested Zakir’s followers to pray for his speedy recovery."

Fans and well-wishers were praying for Zakir Husaain's speedy recovery

As soon as the news of Zakir Hussain's hospitalisation surfaced on the internet, it sparked an outpouring of support and well-wishes from fans and the music community worldwide. All were hoping for the recovery of one of the most celebrated musicians of this age. One user commented, 'Hope ZH gets well soon, best wishes for quick recovery.' Another concerned fan penned, 'Prayer for a speedy recovery of the living legend'. Ex Journalist PMO India, wrote in a long note:

"Remember him waiting at the Bush House before the office opened in the morning and then being introduced as “Tabla Master Zakir Bhai”. Circa 1992. He is a gem. Humble and extremely talented. May God give him a long and healthy life."

Zakir Hussain was a child prodigy tabla player

Zakir Hussain was an expert tabla player who received immense love and respect both in the country and globally. The maestro was revered for his unmatched mastery of the instrument and his unmatched and unmeasurable contributions to Indian classical and world music. Zakir was born in 1951 to Ustad Allah Rakha. He was a child prodigy who began performing at the tender age of seven.

As a solo artist, Zakir Hussain had redefined and captivated the world with the art of tabla playing. He had mastered the skill of technical precision with emotive expression. In 1970, he co-founded the fusion group, Shakti. The group combined Indian classical and jazz influences.

Zakir Hussain has won several accolades for his contribution to music

Zakir Hussain was not just a skilful tabla player but also a prolific composer. The musician had scored music for films such as Heat and Dust and In Custody. He also created some magical compositions for international ballet and orchestral productions. His dedication, passion and skills earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Shri, and the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album.
