From having an IMDb rating of 9.2 to hitting a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has left an enduring mark on every single person who has watched the film. The biographical drama is written, directed, and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.

For the unversed, the film is based on the lives of IPS officer, Manoj Sharma and IRS officer, Shraddha Joshi. From the couple's first meeting to their marriage and how Shraddha helped Manoj achieve his dream of becoming an IPS officer, 12th Fail is a fine example of peak cinema. In the movie, Vikrant Massey portrays the character of Manoj Sharma, while Medha Shankar plays the role of Shraddha Joshi.

Vikrant Massey confirmed 12th Fail was sent to the Oscars 2024

Vidhu Vinod Chopra's film, 12th Fail, was released on October 27, 2023, and it reportedly collected Rs. 55.81 crores. Weeks after the film's exceptional success at the box office, reports were rife that the makers of the film are eyeing to send this film as an independent nomination to the 2024 Oscars. It was in November 2023 when the film's lead actor, Vikrant Massey, confirmed that he and his team had sent 12th Fail to the 2024 Oscars as an independent nomination.

There's no denying admitting that 12th Fail deserves all the praise and critical acclaim it continues to receive from cinema lovers worldwide. However, even after the film's massive success, there are still some people, who aren't aware of the fact that the lead characters in the film are real and it is a biographical film based on the life of Manoj Sharma and Shraddha Joshi. For the unversed, Manoj Sharma, who is an IPS officer, hails from the Morena district of Madhya Pradesh. Right from an early age, he wanted to do something big. However, growing up, he couldn't perform well academically for several reasons. Despite encountering a major setback in his academic journey after failing in class 12, Manoj's determination to become an IPS officer remained unshaken.

Also, even in Classes 9 and 10, Manoj passed with a third division on both occasions. Returning to Manoj's class 12 results, he failed in all subjects except Hindi, which served as his guiding flame. Academically, Manoj started studying again and was pumped to clear class 12; however, on the personal front, he was working as a tempo driver to support his family. It wasn't easy for Manoj, but he cleared class 12 with third division.

When a DSP inspired Manoj Sharma to become a government official

When Manoj Sharma and his brother were running a taxi, the latter was caught by police under false charges after he raised his voice against corrupt officers. It was when DSP Dushyant Singh intervened and helped Manoj's brother avoid getting jailed. When Manoj asked the government official how he reached the position he is today, the SDM advised him to pursue an honest path.

Manoj passed Class 12 without cheating a year later and soon opted for BA to become a DSP. In order to prepare for his government exams, Manoj went to Gwalior with some money that his grandmother had given him. Unfortunately, someone stole all the money, and Manoj was roaming the streets of Gwalior with no help.

With everything wrong that happened to him in Gwalior, Manoj moved to Delhi to study for UPSC to become an IPS officer. In Delhi, he also met his future wife, Shraddha Joshi, who was from Uttarakhand and was also preparing for PCS.

How Shraddha Joshi encouraged Manoj Sharma to prepare for UPSC-CSE despite three failed attempts

Manoj Sharma and Shraddha Joshi's love was tested when the former couldn't clear the mains in his first three attempts. Despite continuous failure in the government exams, Shraddha always encouraged Manoj.

Meanwhile, Shraddha cleared the PCS exam and became a Deputy Collector, while Manoj was still preparing to crack his UPSC-CSE exam. Finally, it was in 2005 when Manoj cleared the exam with AIR 121. After clearing the mains in his fourth attempt, Manoj became an IPS officer from the Maharashtra cadre.

It was in 2005 when Manoj Sharma and Shraddha Joshi got married. The couple has two kids, a daughter named Chia and a son named Manas. Once, in an interview with Lallantop, Manoj admitted that when he met Shraddha for the first time, he was mesmerised by her name and the fact that she was from Almora, Uttarakhand.

After knowing that she is a pahadi, Manoj also learnt how to make tea to impress Shraddha. Such little gestures of Manoj made Shraddha fall in love with him, and their love story is a reminder of how love can be a guiding force instead of a distraction.
