Aamir Khan Expresses Gratitude For Having Ex-Wife Kiran Rao In His Life, 'We Really Love Each Other'

Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao have been making headlines for a while now with their latest venture, Laapata Ladies. The film, which was already generating buzz within the industry, gained even more attention after being selected as India's official entry in the Oscars race for 2024. Laapata Ladies is produced by Aamir and headed by his ex-wife, Kiran. The duo might be divorced, but they share a professional and personal bond regardless, which seems to be growing stronger with each passing day. Recently, the renowned actor opened up about his admiration for Kiran's directorial skills.

Aamir Khan says he's 'grateful and fortunate' that Kiran Rao came into his life

Aamir Khan has always been vocal about being in complete awe of Kiran Rao's talent as a director. This admiration convinced the PK actor that Kiran would be the perfect person to steer a project like Laapata Ladies. Recently, Aamir opened up about his gratitude for having Kiran in his life in a candid interview with BBC News India. He can be quoted as saying:

"I feel so grateful and fortunate that Kiran has come into my life and we have spent 16 beautiful years together. I have learned so much from her. She is an amazing person. She is an amazing human being, and she is also a great director."

Another motivation behind Aamir choosing Kiran to direct Laapata Ladies was her honest storytelling style. The actor stated that upon reading the script, the first name that came to his mind was Kiran's, which was entirely due to her honesty as a director. Aamir stated that Laapata Ladies was such a dramatic story that it needed a director who would tell it as honestly as possible. Doing so would further increase the drama, according to him.

Aamir further complimented Kiran's creative instinct and ability to gel with actors. He revealed that once Kiran took ownership of a script or a film, she would give it her absolute all. This meant that he could truly depend on her to do what was best for the film. Aamir also noted that this was one trait they shared in common.

Aamir Khan reveals how he and Kiran Rao remained amicable despite their divorce

For the unversed, Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao tied the knot on December 28, 2005. However, they called it quits after 16 years of marriage in July 2021. Despite their split, Aamir and Kiran have not only remained cordial but have become even more connected professionally and personally. "There is no secret. She is a great person and I am not too bad either. So we get along really well. We really love each other. We respect each other. Our relationship may have changed slightly but that doesn't mean that what we feel for each other has gone down or something."

Aamir Khan opens up about arguing with Kiran Rao

Aamir further elaborated on whether he and Kiran Rao had any arguments. According to the actor, they would have several clashes when it came to making a film. Aamir revealed:

"Tonnes, of course! We can't make a film without an argument! So we argue every point and we have strong opinions but our sensibility is very similar so we are not talking about fundamental things. Sometimes we are just trying to sometimes convince the other person of a better way of conveying something. She, being the director, I leave a lot to her. I want to go with her instinct. I want her to own the film. I want it to be hers."

Aamir elaborated with a metaphor referring to a film as a child, the director as the mother, and the producer as the father. The actors and crew members working on the film would, thus, become its siblings, aunts, and uncles. However, the mother would always be 'the most important person for the child,' in Aamir's viewpoint.
