Pay parity in Bollywood has always been a topic of discussion, and time and again, female actresses have spoken about how they deserve equal pay as men. If they are working equally as the male actors, then they do deserve the same amount as paid to the male actors. A few years back Aamir Khan addressed the issue and gave a very logical explanation on why actors get paid more.
In 2012, Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, and Rani Mukherjee worked together in the supernatural thriller, Taalash. During the film's promotional interview, a journalist asked Aamir why male Bollywood actors are paid more than actresses. Kareena and Rani agreed to the question and expressed their despair about the unequal pay system. Kareena also added that the society needs to change the way they think in terms of paying women employees.
Aamir Khan explained that actresses work very hard in movies, and so do cameramen, lightmen, and all other crew members, but everyone is not paid equally. If you go by the effort and hard work put in, then everyone should be paid equally, but that doesn't happen as one's reputation is measured by the money they can bring in terms of profit for the film and not in terms of hard work. The pay parity is not due to gender but due to the capabilities of one to earn profit. In Aamir's words:
"The reason why you are paid differently in cinema is because the market forces understand that you are able to bring back that much money back into a film. So, if I am paid 10 rupees, that means I can bring back the money. So, it got nothing to do with your sex as a female or male."
A meme page shared the video on Instagram, and netizens shared their perspectives about Aamir's logical explanations. People were impressed by the way how Aamir calmly dealt with the question and gave an explanation without demeaning anyone. A netizen also highlighted that there have been instances where female actresses have been paid more as they were able to bring in more viewers.
