It was more than almost two decades back, in 2002, when the nation was waiting for the Kapoors and the Bachchans to turn their dosti into rishtedaari with the wedding of Karisma Kapoor and Abhishek Bachchan. But unfortunately, in 2003, a shocking announcement of their engagement being called-off abruptly made everyone disheartened. Dated for over 5 years, Abhishek and Karisma were dreaming about a future together when fate had taken an ugly turn and their dreams got shattered.

Years later, Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor have let bygones be bygones and given that B-town is a small world, their unanticipated encounters have proved that they share a warm camaraderie with each other and their respective families. For instance, on October 3, 2019, Abhishek arrived with Karisma’s father, Randhir Kapoor in Jaipur for JP Dutta’s birthday bash. Abhishek and Randhir Kapoor were snapped at the Jaipur airport where the former made sure the latter was escorted to the car properly.
Coming back to Abhishek Bachchan and Karisma Kapoor’s ‘not meant forever’ love story, it was his sister, Shweta Bachchan Nanda’s wedding in 1997 when sparks had flown between them, and they had soon started dating. Although they had managed to keep their relationship under the wraps for five years, in October 2002, on Amitabh Bachchan's 60th birthday celebrations, the announcement of Abhishek and Karisma’s engagement pleasantly surprised everyone. Karisma had then stated, “It feels wonderful to be a part of this family.”

Revealing how Abhishek Bachchan had popped up the question to her with a diamond ring, Karisma Kapoor had shared in an interview back then, "Abhishek presented me with a diamond ring and proposed to me all of a sudden. I could not say no. I feel I have found the right person in Abhishek, and I couldn’t have asked for a better family than the Bachchans." After their abrupt called-off wedding, two different dimensions had come up speculating the reasons behind their split. A lot of threads on Quora pointed out that the real reason behind their sudden called-off wedding was because Karisma Kapoor's mother, Babita wanted a stable and secure life for her daughters. Having undergone a tough phase after separation with Randhir Kapoor, Babita single-handedly raised her daughters, Karisma and Kareena Kapoor.
During the relationship phase, Abhishek Bachchan had made his Bollywood debut with Karisma Kapoor’s sister, Kareena Kapoor in Refugee, and back then, he was nothing more than Amitabh's son. In addition to the huge professional difference between Karisma and Abhishek, the Bachchan family was also undergoing a rough patch with financial losses and debts, courtesy a failed production house and Amitabh’s deteriorating career. To financially secure her daughter, Babita wanted a prenup to be signed, which was not accepted by Big B.
Another conjectured reason was Abhishek Bachchan’s mother, Jaya Bachchan’s dominating influence over her son, Karisma Kapoor being asked to discontinue her acting career and Babita’s interference in her daughter’s life. It was the love of Karisma and Abhishek which suffered in the end. But time flew, and now more than one-and-a-half decades later, Abhishek and Karisma have no qualms being under the same roof.
Post their breakup, Karisma Kapoor went on to marry Sanjay Kapur, a rich Delhi-based businessman on September 29, 2003. But they too had parted ways and were granted the divorce in 2016. Karisma is now a single mother to her two kids, Samaira Kapoor and Kiaan Raj Kapoor. On the other hand, Abhishek Bachchan is happily married to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and they have a lovely daughter, whom they have named Aaradhya Bachchan.
