The phenomenon of ageism has been a much-debated matter in Bollywood for a long time now. Ironically, the aspect of ageism has unfairly been biased over actresses more than actors, since it has been a frequent trend to represent middle-aged actresses, or even those wishing to make a comeback to the silver screen after years, in stereotypical motherly roles. However, while there have been quite a lot of actresses who have refused to age on-screen, there have also been some others, who have ended up playing mothers to men, who are actually older than them in real life. Let us take a look at a few of these cases.

One of the foremost actresses who played a mother to an actor older than her was none other than Nargis, in her iconic film, Mother India. She was all but 28-years-old when she played a mother to two stalwart actors, Sunil Dutt and Rajendra Kumar. Interestingly, the latter was the same age as her.

Shefali Shah is known to be one of the bold, fearless actresses among her generation. However, there was a time when she played the role of a mother on-screen to a man older than him. Well, in the 2005-released film, Waqt: The Race Against Time, Shefali, at the age of 33 played a mother to Akshay Kumar, who was 38-years-old.
Kshitee Jog rose to fame with her stint in serials and theatres. She was recently a part of Karan Johar’s much-talked about film, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, where she essayed the role of Ranveer Singh’s mother. Kshitee, who is 40-years-old played mother to Ranveer, who is just two years younger than her.

Sonali Kulkarni has been one of the most popular actresses, both in Hindi and Marathi film industries. She made some impeccable performances in films like Dil Chahta Hai, Taxi Number 9211 among others. In 2019, she became a part of the Salman Khan film, Bharat, where she essayed the role of the actor’s mother, who was 9 years older to her.

Sheeba Chadha has earned a special place in the hearts of her audience with her out-of-the-box character portrayals in many hit films and OTT shows. Moreover, she also woos the audience with her charming personality and bold andaaz. In the film, Zero, Sheeba, at the age of 46, essayed the role of Shah Rukh Khan’s mother, who was 53-years-old.
Rakhee Gulzaar has been one of the most talented gems in the Indian cinema. Wife of eminent lyricist, Gulzaar, Rakhee has contributed to some of the most iconic films, including Kabhi Kabhie, Bemisal, Daag, Rudaali among so many others. In the 1982-released film, Shakti, Rakhee played the role of the mother of Amitabh Bachchan when she was 35. Big B, on the other hand, was five years elder than her at that time.
Mona Singh rose to fame with her stint in the hit sitcom, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi. Thereafter, she went on to create some impactful performances, both on the television and the silver screen, which gave her immense recognition and stardom. In 2022, she starred in the Aamir Khan-film, Lal Singh Chaddha, where she essayed the role of Aamir’s mother. She was 41, when she played a mother to Aamir who is 17-years-older than him.
Reema Lagoo was one of the most-loved actresses, who won hearts with her warm and memorable character portrayals on screen. She was best recognised for nailing motherly roles on the celluloid, which fetched her a lot of love and respect. In 1999, she essayed the character of the mother of 40-year-old Sanjay Dutt, when she was all but just a year older to him.
