In recent times, many A-listed actresses have graced the international event and have flaunted some of their best looks. Former Miss World and the diva of Bollywood, Aishwarya Rai has been wowing the Cannes Film Festival since 2002. Aishwarya has set various trends, be it flaunting her roots by wearing sarees or experimenting her looks by donning purple lipstick, she has done it all.

While most of Aishwarya Rai’s red carpet looks at Cannes have got a thumbs up, the diva had her share of disasters, too. Despite being one of the most beautiful women across the globe, Aishwarya has often faced the wrath of fashion critics for some of her Cannes appearances. Let us look at some fashion blunders made by Aishwarya at the prestigious events.
In 2003, Aishwarya Rai graced the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival in a neon green saree designed by Neeta Lulla, along with a long bustier. She accessorised her look with gold jewellery and tied her hair in an updo bun.
After her neon green saree, Aishwarya's other outfit the same year was a lehenga with sequined work all over it. She teamed the garish lehenga with a pink corset-style choli along with diamonds.
The following year too, Aishwarya’s look at Cannes didn’t impress many. For the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, Aishwarya Rai donned a silver cut-out gown by Neeta Lulla. The ill-fitted dress and the abrupt cut-out panels didn’t do justice to her hourglass figure.

For her first appearance post her wedding with Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya donned a classic white strapless gown by Giorgio Armani, which she accessorised with a diamond neckpiece. However, the actress killed the look by matching her eyelids to her dress. Not to forget, her side bangs also didn’t do justice to her look.
Months after giving birth to Aaradhya, Aishwarya Rai made an appearance at Cannes in 2012. The actress was trolled for her weight post-pregnancy. However, the actress went against all the odds by embracing her curves. For the event, she turned heads in an embellished Elie Saab dress. However, it was her over-the-top makeup that disappointed her fans.
Her second look for the year was a long-sleeved Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla saree. The heavy jacket atop the ivory saree added some extra kilos to the actress. The updo hair and brown lipstick, too, weren’t impressive.
2013 was not the best year for Aishwarya Rai at Cannes, as her looks turned out quite terrible. The actress donned a satin aqua gown by Gucci, which didn’t impress the fashion critics. On top of it, she completed her look with a hot pink lipstick.

For her next look, Aishwarya opted for a floor-length Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla anarkali, with heavy embroidery all over it. Atop her average outfit, Aishwarya’s choice of dark eyeshadow made her overall look tacky.
In 2013, during the AIDS gala event at Cannes, Aishwarya Rai opted for a heavy gold saree from Tarun Tahiliani's shelves. She teamed the saree with a matching high-neck blouse and golden dangling earrings. Her attire didn’t impress fashion critics because of too much bling, and her high bun, too, was a complete 'no no'.
In 2016, Aishwarya walked the Cannes red carpet in a pastel floral gown by Rami Kadi. While her attire was hailed by many, her choice of lipstick colour came as a shocker. She matched her outfit with smokey eyes and purple-coloured lips. Her lavender-coloured lipstick went down as one of her controversial looks, which started a meme fest on social media.
At the Cannes Film Festival 2019, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan wore a luminous neon-coloured Jean-Louis Sabaji Couture gown. The custom-made one-shoulder gown gave a fishy look, which didn’t go down well with the fashion police. Atop it, her sleek back combed hair also didn’t impress many.
During the Cannes 2023, Aishwarya Rai graced the red carpet in a silver and black gown from Sophie Couture. The gown featured a trail and a huge hood. She styled it with a big bow belt that accentuated her curves. However, Aishwarya’s look received a lot of flak on social media as many netizens questioned her for wrapping herself in a foil.
At the 76th Cannes Film Festival, Aishwarya Rai opted for a green Valentino cape gown with cape sleeves and sparkly detailing. She completed her overall look with glass heels. As soon as her look from the event went viral, netizens called her Christmas gift wrapping paper. Many questioned her uncomfortable glass heels, too.
Despite some blunders, Aishwarya Rai has been constantly winning our hearts over the years with her bold, impressive and gaudy appearances at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.
