Alka Yagnik is considered as one of the greatest female singers in the history of the Indian music industry, from recording more than 20,000 songs in 25 different languages to winning the Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer on seven occasions. In her illustrious career as a playback singer, Alka Yagnik sang a series of songs which still hold a special place in everyone's hearts. For the uninitiated, Alka Yagnik's mother, Shubha Yagnik was also a trained Indian classical singer. Right from an early age, Shubha recognised that her daughter, Alka had the potential to follow in her footsteps. Hence, the doting mother started giving her training, and at the age of six, Alka started singing devotional songs and bhajans for Akashvani (All India Radio). At the mere age of 14, Alka Yagnik kick-started her career as a professional singer with the song, Thirkat Ang, in the film, Payal Ki Jhankaar.

The beginning of Alka Yagnik and Neeraj Kapoor's love story is right from a Bollywood film. The couple met for the first time on a train. According to a report in ABP News, Alka and Neeraj met for the first time while they were travelling on a train. After their first meeting on the train, they became friends and continued interacting with each other. Despite being in completely different professions, Alka and Neeraj kept on planning meet-ups and developed a likeness for each other after six months of friendship.
After dating each other for over two years, Alka Yagnik and Neeraj Kapoor got married in 1989. However, it wasn't a cakewalk for them, as the singer's parents had given her a warning. For the uninitiated, when Alka Yagnik told her parents about Neeraj Kapoor, who was a Shilong-based businessman, they advised her not to marry him.

The parents told Alka that their long-distance relationship would become a big problem in their married life. However, Alka was confident because Neeraj was planning to shift his base to Mumbai so that he could live with her after their marriage.
As per their plans, Neeraj Kapoor started his business in Mumbai from scratch but suffered huge losses. Once, in an old interview with a news portal, Alka Yagnik opened up about the same and revealed how she was the one who told him to go back to Shillong. She said:
"Neeraj even tried to launch a business in Mumbai. But he is this simple small-town guy and he got cheated of a huge sum of money. So I told him that he should go back to Shillong and not let his business there get affected."
Soon, cracks started appearing in Alka Yagnik and Neeraj Kapoor's marriage, and the couple stopped meeting each other for four to five years. It was a major phase in their married life, as both of them were figuring out what to do about their marriage.

After a long gap and zero communication, Alka and Neeraj realised that they could not live without each other. After realising their pure love for each other, Alka decided to stay in Mumbai, while Neeraj continued living in Shillong. The couple has been leading a long-distance marriage for the last 28 years.
Despite being in a long-distance marriage, Neeraj Kapoor and Alka Yagnik never miss a chance to support each other in their respective professional endeavours. Alka and Neeraj's daughter, Syesha also has a wonderful bond with her father, despite him being living in Shillong most of the time. Once, in an old interview with a news publication, Alka Yagnik described her married life and mentioned the song, 'Can't live with or without you'. She said:
"Our marriage can be summed up in the U2 song 'Can't live with or without you'. It's been a difficult marriage to hold on to. But we couldn't let go of each other."
