Amitabh Bachchan On His Father's First Wife's Death And Meeting His Mother, Teji, 'Uske Baad Woh...'

Amitabh Bachchan is the son of renowned poet, Harivanshrai Bachchan, who has made a remarkable contribution to Hindi literature. Bachchan never passes up the chance to honour his father, sometimes repeating his poetry and highlighting its motivational qualities.

Amitabh Bachchan reflects on his father's grief after the loss of his first wife

Amitabh Bachchan remembers happy times spent with his parents, Harivanshrai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan, but he misses them most of the time. Amitabh Bachchan shared that after the loss of his first wife, Shyama Bachchan, his father fell into a deep and sad state. She died a few years into the marriage. The poetry he wrote during that time was marked by darkness, each verse was filled with profound sorrow and grief. In a recent episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, he said: 

"My father’s first wife passed away. Uske baad woh gambhir sthiti mein chale geye, bahut depressed state mein aur jitni bhi kavita unhone likhi uss zamane mein bahut dark thi. Bahut dukh ke sath bhari hui thi." 

Amitabh Bachchan recalls the first meeting between his parents, Harivanshrai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan frequently reflects on and misses his parents. He reminisced about how his father first met his mother, Teji Bachchan. He shared that his father had gone to Bareilly to visit a friend, and during a dinner gathering, his father was asked to recite a poem. Just before he could begin, the friend’s wife was asked to invite Teji in, and that was the moment when they met. In his words:

"He had a friend in Bareilly and got invited to meet him. My father went to meet him. During the dinner, he was requested to narrate a poem. But before my father could begin, his friend asked his wife to call in Teji. That’s where he met her."

Amitabh Bachchan shares how his father knew Teji was the one

Sharing more details about that meeting, Bachchan recounted how his father described Teji as beautiful, vividly recalling her clothes the first time they met. She quietly listened as he read his poem, Kya Karu Samvedna Lekar Tumhari, and was moved to tears by his words. Bachchan revealed that was the moment he knew she would be his life partner.
