Amitabh Bachchan's Lawyer On His 2007 Farmland Case: 'Problems Escalated Because His Father...'

Amitabh Bachchan is one of the most popular actors in the Hindi film industry. He has marked his name in the hearts of millions by working in blockbuster films like Sholay, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Don, Ghoomer, Mard, Deewar, Coolie, Brahmastra, Baghban, Silsila, Zanjeer and many more. Though Amitabh Bachchan tries to stay away from controversies, he, too, had to go through several controversial phases in his life. Back in 2007, the actor was all over the news for having acquired farmland in Maharashtra despite the state regulations that forbade non-farmers from purchasing agricultural land. Now, his lawyer, Pradeep Rai reacted to the same.

Amitabh Bachchan believed that his farmland case escalated as he didn't listen to his father's warning

In an interview with The Lallantop, Amitabh Bachchan's lawyer, Pradeep Rai opened up about his 2007 farmland case. Talking about the same, the lawyer revealed that the actor believed that his problems escalated as he didn't pay heed to his late father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Elaborating more about it, Pradeep stated that Amitabh's father had said that their 'next generation' shouldn't buy land as there would be troubles. In Pradeep's words:

"Amitabh Bachchan personally believed that the problems escalated because his father had said that 'our next generation will not purchase land, if they do, there will be troubles.' He considered every word of his father as equivalent to that of God."

Further, in the same conversation, Pradeep mentioned that Amitabh Bachchan was wrongly framed in the case by the opposition. Reflecting on the same, the lawyer mentioned that as per Maharashtra's rule, a non-farmer couldn't buy land, but the actor falls under the bracket as his ancestors were farmers. Adding that Amitabh Bachchan later donated the land, Pradeep said:

"But there was a rule in Maharashtra that if you buy farmland, you should be a farmer. Basically, Amitabh Bachchan was not a farmer, but his ancestors were, and so he came under that bracket. But since the time the opposition came to power, they needed a reason, and they tried to trap him. However, he donated the land later."

When Amitabh Bachchan discussed his farmland case

For the unversed, it was in the year 2000 when Amitabh Bachchan bought land in Maharashtra. In 2007, he was embroiled in the case. Earlier, during his appearance on The RKB Show, the actor discussed his farmland case and questioned what the political party would get by dragging his name. Mentioning that he is not interested in joining politics, Amitabh said:

"I am a regular person. What would they gain by dragging me in the mud? Let's assume that they're right, that the land is not mine and that I obtained it legally, they'll throw me in jail? Then I'll go to jail. But what would the point be? I am not a politician, nor am I interested in joining politics."
