May 19, 2015, was a sad day for two of the Bollywood’s most creative persons. We’re talking about Anurag Kashyap and Kalki Koechlin. Anurag and Kalki met on the sets of critically acclaimed Dev. D and love ensued between the two thereon. After dating each other for more than two years, Anurag and Kalki got married in 2011.
However, in 2013, media reports came floating in and took everyone by surprise when it was rumoured that the couple has some turbulence in their marital life. The rumours turned out to be true and they divorced each other in 2015. Before marrying Kalki, Anurag had already been through a failed marriage before. He was earlier married to Aarti Bajaj with whom he has a daughter, Aaliyah Kashyap.
Confirming the news of their separation to a media portal, Kalki was once quoted as saying, “I am in a good space. Last year was a little bit more of a struggle, as I didn’t know where I was going. I wasn’t sure where my relationship with Anurag was going. All of it was unclear. Now, we are pretty clear that we are not going to be together. We have already applied for divorce and will get it soon.” (Also Read: Most Expensive Divorces Of Bollywood That Made Celeb Husbands Almost Bankrupt)
And finally, in May 2015, Anurag and Kalki issued a statement to the media which stated, “Me and Kalki are separating, we are taking time off from each other to figure things out. We are not divorcing. We request the media to please respect our privacy and give us our space and not speculate. Thank you, Kalki and Anurag,” thereby confirming the final separation. So, what was the reason of their separation? Reportedly, it had to do with Gangs of Wasseypur actress, Huma Qureshi. But later that rumour was discarded when Anurag opened up about it in Koffee with Karan season 4 and Kalki did a film with Huma.
Now, in a recent YouTube show called Tape Cast under the channel of Film Companion, Anurag and Kalki got to ask each other a few questions. For those of you who do not know the format of Tape Cast, we must mention here that two guests appear in an episode. One guest picks a category for the other which is written on the edge of a cassette which contains the question for the second person. The question is played out in a voice over inside a tape recorder. So, when Kalki picked up the ‘Do Not Play’ category for Anurag, somewhere the viewers knew what was coming. And so it did! The question to Anurag was- “Have the two failed marriages led you to become a better person?”

After a laughter ride and a bit of shyness, Anurag answered, “I don't think I was a bad man. Yeah well, I learnt so much more…marriage is a lot of commitment. I think in marriages you have to make an effort to make it work. I wish everything was organic that you know two people come together and works out but yeah it's a lot of work… it's also scary I don't know. What's the question? Have the two marriages failed marriages helped you become a better person?”
“I think I've become yes. I've become more understanding more tolerant. I take and give more space. I know that when you're dealing with whole lot of things outside, you don't have to bring it home. You learn from every failure. I have understood the importance of taking holidays… yeah importance of exercising, importance to stay healthy, eat right… everything doesn't have to be cinema. I think about it... I don't sleep with cinema in the bed anymore… yeah I'm a better person I'm more liveable person.”
To this Kalki intervened and very sweetly said, “I think you were always a great person I think heart of gold.” Anurag continued, “I know I have my problems. I was very lazy. I would come home and just sleep. Outside of cinema, I did not know how to do conversation… which I'm getting better at probably.”
So, here we’re now. Beyond all the rumours and speculations as to what really led to their divorce, we must mention here that Anurag and Kalki make an adorable pair, and even if they are separated now, their genuine camaraderie, friendliness, love and respect for each other are so evident. And this video proves that.
We can speculate on Anurag’s statements and assert that it wasn’t Huma Qureshi because of whom they got separated. It’s quite evident that the reasons were much more personal. Perhaps it was Anurag’s passion for cinema (“I don’t sleep with cinema anymore”), or maybe his over-achieving attitude and madness towards his work (“I have understood the importance of taking holidays”). Something wasn’t just right in their marriage and for the greater good, they separated. It must also be noted here that while Anurag was talking about his two failed marriages and how he has changed as a person, Kalki said, “Shubhra is lucky then.”
For the uninitiated ones, Shubhra is Anurag’s alleged girlfriend. Anurag keeps posting her pictures on his social media accounts. Read more about Shubhra-Anurag alleged romance here.
We are in complete admiration of Kalki and Anurag, for the way they are, in both- their creative life as well their personal. Check out the full epiosde here:
