We still live in a world where a girl child is considered as a burden, and are subjected to gender-based violence. Men certainly have more privileges than a woman. But there are some cases, which make us believe that humanity is somewhat lost. When we see the reports like ‘16-year-old girl beheaded and her body parts were cut before they were doused in acid’, ’40-year-old cab driver rapes and impregnates teenage daughter’, ‘UP teen, on her way to fill scholarship form, raped and murdered’, ‘man rapes 13-year-old mentally challenged daughter, survivor delivers stillborn’, ‘2-month-old girl raped by father’, ’75-year-old woman branded witch and lynched in Jharkhand, another fed human excreta in Bihar’ and a lot more, shake us to the core and while no words can do justice to the misery of the victims or make things normal for them, but punishing the guilty might give some solace to their hearts. On September 14, 2020, a 19-year-old woman was brutally gang raped in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district. The woman was out on fields to cut grass when she was attacked by four men, tortured, raped and was found unconscious with multiple fractures, her tongue cut off and her legs entirely paralyzed while her arms were partially paralyzed. Two weeks after fighting for her life, she succumbed to her injuries and died at Safdarjung Hospital, Delhi. Since then, everyone is expressing their anger on social media, condemning the heinous crime and demanding justice for the deceased soul. Celebs too, have spoken via their social media handles, and Anushka Sharma is one of them!
We have often seen Anushka Sharma raising her voice on the happenings around the world and she isn’t afraid in calling spade a spade. Even if it is harsh reality check, Anushka doesn’t shy away from speaking her mind. When the Hathras gang rape victim had taken her last breath, Anushka Sharma expressed how devastated she is upon hearing the horrific news. Soon-to-be a mother, Anushka Sharma, on October 2, 2020, penned a strong-worded note on the 'privilege' of having a male child, amid the ongoing protests against the Hathras gang-rape. Calling this notion, a ‘myopic vision’, Anushka wrote, “In our society, having a male child is seen as a 'privilege'. Of course, it’s no more privilege than having a girl child but the fact is that this so-called privilege has been viewed incorrectly and with an extremely myopic view.” Anushka continued saying that it is rather the parents' responsibility that counts as the 'privilege', “The only ‘privilege’ is that one has the opportunity to raise a boy in a way that he respects a girl. That’s your DUTY as a parent to society. So, don’t think of it as a PRIVILEGE. The gender of the child doesn't make you privileged but it is actually the responsibility you owe to society to raise a boy so well that women feel safe and protected."
Post the demise of a 22-year-old girl, who was allegedly raped in Balrampur, Anushka Sharma had penned another wrote on Instagram. She had written, "Barely any time has passed and we are hearing of another brutal rape!?! In which world do such monsters think they can do this to a young life. This is beyond comprehension, so distressing! Is there any fear in the minds of such men? How do we as a society put fear in them and protect our women? #NoMercyForRapists #Balrampur."
