AR Rahman has always been controversies’ favourite child. Once, the musician was embroiled in a hate brigade when the musician performed at an event to commemorate the 10 years of Slumdog Millionaire, it was his daughter, Khatija, who was asked to speak a few lines about her father. However, as soon as the pictures of the father-daughter duo surfaced on social media, all that people took notice of was Khatija clad in a burqa.
Soon, a section of social media started trolling Rahman for his ideologies on freedom. Some called him a hypocrite, and others called his actions a double standard. As the controversy hit the headlines, Khatija decided to react and gave a befitting reply to trollers targeting her father. Taking to her social media account, Khatija wrote:
“The recent conversation of myself on stage with my dad has been doing the rounds. Although, I didn’t expect such an overwhelming response. However, there were certain comments which said that this attire is being forced by my dad and that he has double standards. I would like to say that the attire I wear or the choices I make in my life does not have anything to do with my parents.”
In the same post, Khatija asked the haters not to pass any judgments without knowing the truth. Calling the ‘veil’ her personal choice, she continued:

“The veil has been my personal choice with complete acceptance and honour. I’m a sane mature adult who knows to make my choices in life. Any human being has a choice to wear or do what he/she wants and that’s what I’ve been doing. Hence, kindly don’t make your own judgements without understanding the exact situation.”
Rahman later took the time to Twitter and shared a picture of the ladies in his family. In the picture, we could see Rahman’s wife, Saira Banu, their daughters, Khatija and Raheema, posing along with Nita Ambani. However, it was his hashtag that caught our attention as he captioned the picture as:
“The precious ladies of my family Khatija, Raheema and Sairaa with NitaAmbaniji #freedomtochoose.”
