Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan is an all-time popular mythological show, which even today, continues to garner a lot of popularity after so many years. While the epic on which it was based is unanimously known, it was the choice of actors who gave life to the characters, who are remembered to date. For the unversed, the show starred Arun Govil, Dipika Chikhlia, Sunil Lehri and Dara Singh in titular roles, amongst others.
In an interview with News18, Arun Govil opened up about the journey and immense popularity that he garnered for essaying the titular role of Lord Ram in Ramanand Sagar’s hit show, Ramayan. The actor revealed that initially, he was warned by many for not opting to do a mythological show, since such kind of genre wasn’t considered great back then. Moreover, it also consisted of the additional danger of getting typecasted, thereafter hampering the possibility of bagging different roles in future. In his words:

“I was a commercial actor before doing Ramayan. I was doing good work. But after starring in Ramayan, I wasn’t able to do that work. I used to think that this was a mistake. Being an actor, if you are not doing commercial cinema than you are nothing. Also, at that time starring a mythological show wasn’t considered something great. My friends and family members told me, ‘Why are you doing Ramayan? This isn’t graded work, you will get caught in this type of work.’ But I was like, ‘I don’t know. But since I have thought about it, let me to do it.’ I faced a lot of difficulty after that as an actor.”

Continuing his revelation, Arun Govil then talked about the kind of popularity, fame and love he received on the contrary, for being such a pivotal part of Ramayan. The actor recalled that his perception of a commercial actor only gaining success changed overnight after being a part of such a magnanimous show. He mentioned:
“But I understood it later when I got a lot of love from the audience. I wouldn’t get so much love if I was a commercial actor. Now, I think if I wouldn’t have done this role, I wouldn’t have lived my life. “The level of admiration I have gotten, I am not a normal person. If a normal person would have gotten this much admiration they won’t have their head on their shoulder. I often think what do people see in me? God is giving me all of this and I tell myself to take whatever he gives. He has blessed me a lot. But I have no credit in this, I haven’t done anything, I’m just a medium.”
Previously, in an interaction with Cinestaan, Arun Govil opened up on the impact of his on-screen character of Lord Ram had in his real life. The actor, in his response, highlighted the kind of admiration he got for essaying such a venerated character, to the extent that ordinary people would also mistake him to be Lord Ram himself. He further narrated an incident where he once visited an industrialist, who on meeting the former simply prostrated in front of him in a shashtang namaskar.

For the unversed, while Arun is most commonly known to many from his reel-life name, it is his personal life which stays folded away from the limelight. The 66-year-old actor is married to veteran actress, Sreelekha Govil. She had been a part of the 1966 film, Himmatvar opposite the mega star, Dharmendra. The couple is blessed with their son, Amal and their daughter, Sonika.
