Asha Bhosle and late Lata Mangeshkar have remained two of the greatest gems in the world of music and playback singing. The two sisters were blessed with an angelic voice, through which they won several hearts. While Lata Mangeshkar might not be with us any longer, her and Asha Bhosle's evergreen and iconic melodies still echo in every corner of the world, and listeners, across different age groups relish the songs like a serenading experience. However, despite being singing stalwarts from different generations, there were often rumours that the sisters didn’t share a cordial relationship professionally, and had stiff rivalry with one another. Asha Bhosle, had once opened up about the same.
In one of her previous interviews with the Hindustan Times, Asha Bhosle had once addressed the frequent rumours that existed back in the days, about her alleged rivalry with her sister, Lata Mangeshkar professionally. There is no doubt that both of them were supremely talented in their own merit, and neither of them could’ve replicated the other’s talents. Speaking along the same lines, Asha had said that despite the rumours which surfaced about an alleged tiff and competition between her and Lata, they always remained thick throughout. Quoting the phrase on how blood is always thicker than water, Asha Bhosle had said:
“People did carry tales and try to create trouble, but blood is thicker than water. I remember, sometimes both of us would be at a function and some industry types would ignore me and interact only with her, as if to prove their loyalty. Later, didi and I would have a good laugh.”

During her speech at the first Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Award ceremony in Mumbai on April 2022, Asha Bhosle had recalled a lesser-known anecdote about her dearest didi, Lata Mangeshkar. She mentioned how the latter refused to sing at a wedding, despite being offered a whopping sum of 10 crore dollars. Although, Lata did ask Asha if she wanted to replicate her offer for the wedding. However, when Asha also refused for the same, Lata Mangeshkar straight away gave a clear-cut response to the representative of the wedding. Asha Bhosle had said:
“Someone invited us for a wedding. They had tickets worth million dollars or pounds. They said they wanted Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar. Didi asked me 'will you sing at a wedding?' I said I won't and she then told the rep, 'We will not sing even if you offer 10 crore dollars, because we do not sing at weddings.' That person was very disappointed."
For the unversed, the Nightingale of India, late Lata Mangeshkar left a deep void in the hearts of her countless fans when she passed away on February 6, 2022. While the entire nation mourned the loss of a gem, it was her sister, Asha Bhosle who was totally heartbroken with the demise of her didi, who looked onto her as her child. A few days later, Asha Bhosle bared her heart out on the memoriam show for Lata, named Naam Reh Jayega. Revealing Lata ji’s life and demise on her life, Asha Bhosle painfully mentioned how still now, she expected her sister to call her. She could be quoted as saying:
“Didi used to earn 80/- and we used to run our household in that money. We were 5 people, and we used to have many relatives who would visit us. Didi never said no to anyone, she used to believe in sharing. There were times we used to buy Kurmura (Puffed Rice) for 2 Annas and used to eat that with tea and sleep. We had no complaints, they were simply happy times. can't believe she is gone. I still think I will get a call anytime saying, Asha, kashi aahes tu? "
