The beloved sitcom, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC) has often been in the spotlight for its heartwarming stories and stellar cast. However, behind the scenes, the show seems to have its share of controversies. The show has been under hot waters for quite some time now, given former actors’ revelations about the show’s maker, Asit Kumarr Modi’s alleged toxic conduct and unfair conditions. The latest controversy involves Asit Modi and former cast member, Palak Sindhwani, who portrayed the role of ‘Sonu Bhide’.
Palak Sindhwani left TMKOC in 2024, amidst allegations of breaking her exclusivity contract, which also landed in a legal battle. She later accused the show's makers of ‘mental harassment’ and ‘non-payment’. Recently, in an interview with News18 Showsha, Asit Modi alleged Palak's lack of professionalism. Citing her mood as a problematic factor, Asit revealed that it was one of the reasons for terminating her from the show. Asit Modi said:
“Everyone has to work in a discipline. I am also making a show for Sab TV. I also work with dignity. I have a contract with them. Similarly, artists also have contracts with me. We have to make 26 episodes every month. There has to be a discipline. It can’t depend on your mood. Everyone is working. This is one of the reasons.”
Further in the interview, Asit Modi explained the significance of exclusivity contracts in preserving the show’s image. Hinting at Palak’s violation of her contractual terms with the show’s makers, Modi shared that any advertisement could have an impact on the show’s image. He was quoted as:
“People know you because of your character. Whether it is Palak or somebody else. Abdul’s real name is Sharad but people call him Abdul Bhai. Artists are known by their character’s names. We have positive characters. We have loving characters. If somebody goes and advertises anything, it will impact our show’s image. Everyone works within a contract. I also have to work within a limit. You cannot break your contract.”
Asit Modi also confirmed that the production house had sent a legal notice to Palak after she allegedly violated her contract. However, the intent was not to take matters to court but to resolve the issue peacefully. Asit explained:
“We asked her to work within the contract limits. We aren’t saying a no for anything but you have to ask us. If you decide to do anything, it cannot work that way. We sent her a notice. We weren’t dragging her to the court. Our lawyer tried to explain things to her nicely, but she did not understand. It created a fuss out of nothing.”
After leaving TMKOC, Palak Sindhwani alleged mistreatment, claiming the makers threatened to delete her social media and block brand deals. She said they turned rude when she questioned a breach of contract accusation. Meanwhile, Asit Modi dismissed her allegations, taking a sharp dig at her maturity and implying that her claims lacked credibility.
