Ever since ‘Chak De India’, the Yashraj Production House has shed its identity as the producer of ‘guy meet girl’ kind romantic movies. Though love and its eternal significance still remain to be at the core of the movies, the approach towards the plot has changed significantly, keeping in tune with the present times. “Band Baaja Baarat” bears live testimony to the above fact as the lead characters in the movie discover love while planning perfect weddings for the would-be couples.
Anushka Sharma is brilliant as an ambitious wedding planner, a typical girl from Delhi who follows one simple business principle, “do not fall for your business associate”. As a ruthlessly outspoken girl, Anushka is a clear reflection of the today’s economically emancipated youth, who rarely care about the suavity of corporate world, unless and until there is a real need. Right when you thought the things couldn’t get more frenzied, enters Bitto aka Ranveer Singh, typical UP wannabe guy who does not know what he wants to do in his life, however, is sure about not going back to the sugarcane farms in his village and calls business as ‘binness’.

Bittoo and Shruti begin planning weddings under their banner “Shaadi Mubarak” and the initial success leaves them all happy and smiling, so much so that the girl does not hesitate while breaking her own carefully laid out business principle and falls in love, after what the guy considers as a ‘simple one night stand’. Things start going awry, partners become competitors, to the extent that they are both neck deep in debt and doing miserably as wedding planners.
The opportunity comes knocking in the form of a Big Fat Indian Wedding planning contract, with the condition that the duo work together and recreate the brilliance, which they reluctantly agreed to. We know what follows and after a series of brilliant dialogues and plot events, the duo professes its love for each other and gets married to live happily ever after.
Interesting, eh? Wait untill you have seen the movie because it is totally delightful. The dialogues are simply superb; you cannot help voicing them because they portray Delhi culture at its best. Bittoo with his Haryana accent and cheesy lines and Shruti with her quick temper and sharp tongue is a scene to behold. More than the sizzling chemistry, the verbal duels will make you ask for an Encore.
Encore is what we do need, for it is a simply delightful movie, especially after a series of high budget failures at the box office in the past six months. Consider this: the wedding industry in India has Midas’ gold touch and it’s the right time to be a part of it.
Maneesh Sharma has handled the plot well doing justice with the supporting cast that really jazz up the movie. Songs are real chartbusters and great music for weddings too. Real kudos to Anushka and Ranveer, who live up to their characters and are adorable. Let’s not forget the milestone editing for it is not easy to handle the excesses in such a plot.
Overall, on a scale of 5, we rate it at 4.
