Late Bollywood legend, Raj Kapoor birth centenary anniversary is being celebrated today, December 14, 2024. On the momentous occasion, filmmaker-producer, Boney Kapoor, who was a distant relative of the iconic actor-director and shared a tight bond with him, reflected on the fond memories they shared. Boney also recalled the low phase Raj Kapoor went through when Mera Naam Joker didn't perform as well as he hoped. The producer revealed that the late actor, who was known for his love of alcohol, didn't touch a single drop while the film was being re-edited following its dismal box-office performance. 

Boney Kapoor says Raj Kapoor would 'eat, drink, and sleep only his films'

Producer, Boney Kapoor paid tribute to the late Bollywood legend and his dear friend, Raj Kapoor. He praised Raj Kapoor for being only 'filmmaker-actor-director-producer-editor' to last five decades and deliver a blockbuster in each decade. Stating that there was nobody like him, Boney reminisced about his friend, Raj Kapoor, telling The Indian Express:

"To begin with, he is the only filmmaker-actor-director-producer-editor who has lasted for five decades and given a blockbuster in each decade. He caught up with trends, created trends and even changed with time. He used to eat , drink and sleep only his films. He grew with every decade, Bobby, every film was different and so many were ahead of his time. A. a lot of his thoughts are my thoughts now."

Boney Kapoor reveals Raj Kapoor quit drinking when Mere Naam Joker was being re-edited

In the candid chat with The Indian Express, Boney Kapoor also recalled the highs and lows of Raj Kapoor's career. The producer revealed that the late actor hit a low phase when Mera Naam Joker didn't perform as well as he had hoped. For the unversed, while the film is considered one of Raj Kapoor's most celebrated films now, it was immensely underappreciated when it was first released.

Boney revealed that despite his love of alcohol, Raj Kapoor wouldn't touch a single drop of liquor while Mera Naam Joker was being re-edited after its initial failure. Boney can be quoted as saying:

"Later on, it started doing well. It was a money spinner in the re-rounds. He re-edited the film. A person who was so fond of drinking, he used to give it up when the film was in its final stage He never used to touch alcohol during that period, till the entire post-production period was out. this really well."

Boney Kapoor says Raj Kapoor was his 'God'

Further in the interview, Boney fondly recalled his personal bond with the late legend, Raj Kapoor . He recalled that they discussed many things, from personal to professional, and the producer even looked up to him like a 'God.' Boney said:

"I had a very close and affectionate relationship with him. After seeing my first film Hum Paanch, he said, 'You will be responsible for the first branch of Kapoors.' We discussed not only professional matters but he contributed to my growth. what he has, I will attain whatever I want to achieve."
