Spanning across decades, weddings have evolved and like how! Looking back at the time when our parents got married and the weddings nowadays, there's an evident drastic change. Gradually, weddings are breaking free of the norms, hence creating a surreal and personalised experience for the couple. If we told someone about planning an eco-friendly wedding years ago, it would mean compromising on the grandeur and overall aesthetics. But today, with couples opting for eco-friendly weddings, it's proved that they are equally appealing and exciting.
Be it the inspirational wedding favours of seed balls wrapped in muslin cloth and saplings in jute bags, DIY decor with handmade signages, creative and thoughtful wedding invites, incorporating sustainable materials or organizing the zero-waste wedding, the brides and grooms now are doing their bit for the environment. Even some celebrity couples have taken the sustainable and eco-friendly routes at their weddings and they are truly the celebrations worth featuring!
Here's a list of celeb couples, who opted for eco-friendly weddings and did their bit for the environment:
Be it their love for animals or concern for the environment, Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli have been an inspiration in the truest sense. Anushka and Virat had dated for a few years before tying the knot in December 2017. In the times when mithai and dry fruits were given with the wedding invites, Virat and Anushka had set the trend with unique favours. For their Mumbai wedding reception, Virat and Anushka had given saplings along with the invitation card. Their eco-friendly and unique favour with the invitation card became an idea to steal for the to-be married couples as it added a breeze of freshness to the invites.
Milind Soman and Ankita Konwar had tied the knot on April 22, 2018, in a blend of Assamese and Maharashtrian wedding rituals. Milind and Ankita's wedding is a quintessential example of an eco-friendly marriage as the couple got hitched on Earth Day. Milind and Ankita's wedding outfits were made of 'bamboo-silk textile, which is not only organic but is handwoven and 100% biodegradable' as informed by their designer, Madhu Jain in an interview with Wedding Wire. The décor at their wedding was around the theme of nature including marigolds, jasmine garlands and banana leaves, all of which are locally available and are considered auspicious. Even the jewellery worn by them around their heads were made of baby lotuses.

The highlight of Milind Soman and Ankita Konwar's wedding was that the couple planted a tree for each guest, who attended their marriage, as a tribute to Mother Nature. Post-wedding, Milind had posted a picture with his wife, Ankita, revealing how they are celebrating the new beginnings by planting a tree. Milind had written:
"Nurture the gifts you have received planting a tree with @earthy_5 for every guest, 11 done! #everydayisEARTHday #celebratenewbeginings #everyday #BetterHabits4BetterLife at @bohemyanblue #love #life #earth #friends #family."

As soon as the wedding date is finalised, the family decides on the guest list. However, gone are the days when wedding invitation cards were sent to family and friends as keepsakes. Now, couples prefer the paperless route to invite their loved ones to the wedding, which is more hassle-free, quick, personalised and cost-effective. Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja had also taken the paperless route, making their wedding an eco-friendly one. Sonam and Anand invited their guests by sending them e-invites, which simply spoke about the phenomenal eco-friendly taste and preference of the couple. Their wedding e-invite went viral on social media back then and the couple was lauded for their decision.
Shakti - Astitva Ke Ehsaas Ki actress, Rubina Dilaik and Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka actor, Abhinav Shukla tied the knot on June 21, 2018, in Shimla after dating each other for a long time. Just like Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma, Rubina and Abhinav opted for a biodegradable wedding invite made of MDF and recyclable paper, and it was given along with a sapling. Abhinav had spoken about the same back then and revealed that it was Rubina's idea to gift a sapling with their wedding invite. Abhinav was quoted as saying by The Times of India:
"It's Ruby's idea. She came up with the invite, which resonates with us and is symbolic of our love. The plant we have chosen isn't demanding. It requires a spoonful of water a week."
Sharing a picture of their customised wedding invitation card and the plant, Rubina Dilaik had written:
"True Love nurtures and nourishes the soul! With this thought we @ashukla09 wanted to gift "a life" to our friends to mark the beginning of our new journey and thank them for being with us through our thick and thin. The love is not only for people and by people but we both have love for nature as well hence, physically our invite is organic and totally biodegradable! The cards are made of MDF wood and recycled paper! We want to encourage people to keep weddings fun and nature friendly!"

Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh got married on November 14-15, 2018, according to Sindhi and Konkani wedding rituals. Deepika and Ranveer had three wedding receptions, one in Bangalore and two in Mumbai. The wedding reception in Bangalore was hosted by Ranveer's parents, Mr and Mrs Bhavnani. Understanding the gravity of the situation and doing their bit for the environment, Deepika and Ranveer's Bangalore reception was held at a plastic-free zone, where biodegradable tableware products were used.
Speaking about their association with Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, Ved Krishna, Vice Chairman and Strategy Head, CHUK, had stated in an interview with NDTV:
"We are happy to be associated with DeepVeer’s reception ceremony. What people don’t realise while using plastic and Styrofoam tableware in weddings and events, is that their hot food gets mixed with carcinogens emitted from these products which turn cancerous to the body. Understanding the graveness of the environmental pollution caused by single use plastic and plastic tableware disposables, celebrities like Deepika and Ranveer, who stand as influencers and role models for today’s youth are setting an example that – We and only we can bring in a positive change!"
UNEP National Goodwill Ambassador, Dia Mirza tied the knot with Vaibhav Rekhi on February 15, 2021. Being a connoisseur of eco-friendly living, Dia made sure her wedding décor was sustainable, without any usage of plastic. The wedding was held in her garden of the house, where she has stayed for the last 19 years. In a world where weddings are synonymous with extravagance, Dia organised a ‘completely sustainable ceremony without plastics or any waste’ and the materials used for the minimal décor were ‘completely biodegradable and natural’.
Elaborating on the same, Dia Mirza had written in the caption of the post, in which she shared her wedding picture:
"The garden where I have spent every morning for the past 19 years was an absolutely magical setting and the most intimate and perfect space for our simple and soulful ceremony! We are so proud to have been able to organise a completely sustainable ceremony without plastics or any waste. The materials used for the minimal decor we went for were completely biodegradable and natural."
Our hearts gush looking at the steps couples are taking to make this world a better place to live! Celebrities, with a massive reach and influential power, are becoming flagbearers of promoting eco-friendly measures at weddings and it's truly an inspiration. These were surely the ideas to steal and bookmark for our own wedding. We hope, more couples with time, opt for eco-friendly measures in their daily life as well as on the most important day of their life, i.e., their wedding.
