The secret to getting a fantastic coloring job is to pick the right hair color. This is not as hard as it seems. It is not a simple task either. It is not like picking the first color that catches your fancy or something that looks good on someone else. There are a few basic rules that you need to keep in mind to come away with flying colors.

Is your skin tone warm or is it cool? If your complexion is darker or olive, your eyes are brown or black, and your veins look green, your skin tone is warm.
If your complexion is pale with some pink undertones and ruddiness, your eyes are blue or green, and your veins look blue, you belong to the cool group.

People with warm skin tones should opt for richer shades of browns, reds and golden shades that are not too light.

Those of you with a cool skin tone should go for ash blonde or maybe a nice shade of brown. Unlike the warm tones, avoid reddish browns but do try out gold shades that are lighter.
Black, Blonde or Red
If you are extremely pale, jet black hair will wash you out. Similarly dark skin and light blonde hair is never a good match. A good stylist can work out a compromise but tread with caution if you plan to do this at home. Also, note that it is difficult to get rid of black color, and blonde colors use higher concentrations of bleach which makes your hair more susceptible to damage.
Red is a great color to sport on anyone as long as you pick the right red otherwise it looks orange which is not a color you want to stick with. It particularly suits those with yellow tones. It fades quickly and requires frequent touch-ups.
You are not home free after selecting your color. You will now have to decide how you want the color to be applied-all over coloring, highlights or lowlights? The technique also makes a big difference.
