It was on the night of July 17, 2014, when politician, Shashi Tharoor's wife, Sunanda Pushkar, was found dead in a suite of a super-luxury hotel in the nation's capital, Delhi. Unaware about the tragic event, Sunanda's husband, Shashi Tharoor, was attending a meeting with the then-Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, along with the entire Congress Party.
Later on, the Congress MP was booked with serious charges like abetment to suicide and cruelty by the hands of Delhi Police, and a long legal battle had started. It reached its endpoint on August 18, 2021, after Shashi Tharoor received the 'clean chit' from a Delhi court, in his wife, Sunanda Pushkar's murder case after more than seven years.

On August 18, 2021, Delhi court's special judge, Geetanjali Goel, conducted a video-conferencing with Congress MP, Shashi Tharoor, in which she declined Delhi Police's charge sheet, which had stated the former Union Minister should be investigated. After all these years of investigations and accusations, Shashi Tharoor is now announced clean in the case of abetment of cruelty and suicide. However, the detailed order is still in progress and will be made public soon.
After hearing the judge, Geetanjali Goel's final verdict, an elated Shashi Tharoor titled all these years of investigation as "seven and a half years of absolute torture". After some hours, the Congress MP also released an official statement in which he stated that finally, after this verdict, he, along with his family members, will mourn his late wife, Sunanda Pushkar, in peace. He said, "Nonetheless, the fact that justice has been done, at last, will allow all of us in the family to mourn Sunanda in peace."

Going further in his statement, Shashi Tharoor also thanked the judge, Geetanjali Goel, for ending his long-testing nightmare with a significant conclusion. He wrote, "I would like to express my humble thanks to Judge Geetanjali Goel for her orders today, discharging me from the charges levied by the Delhi Police, which I have consistently described as preposterous. This brings a significant conclusion to the long nightmare which had enveloped me after the tragic passing of my late wife, Sunanda."
After some hours, Shashi Tharoor's lawyer, Senior Advocate, Vikas Pahwa, also reacted to the Delhi court's verdict in his client's favour. The advocate said, "Ultimately justice has prevailed… The charges levelled by the police were absurd and preposterous. Even the most essential ingredients of the offences were not present in this case. All the reports of various medical boards… exonerated him from the charges of homicide or suicide. The chargesheet was without any basis."
