Someone has rightly said, ‘No one wishes to have dark days, sleepless nights, grumpy mornings and this endless dark tunnel with no sign that it will ever end. Depression is not a choice.’ When we hear the word depression or the news of one of our close family members suffering from the same, our heart just sinks. Not because we can’t deal with them but because we know how difficult it gets for the person to deal with himself/herself. Waking up in the morning with no aim, trying to sleep on haunted nights, walking aimlessly on roads not knowing where to go, with whom to talk; all these feelings kill a person mentally and from within. Brave are those who talk about it to find a solution to it and battle it out. (Recommended Read: Taimur Ali Khan Pose For A Complete Family Picture At Pataudi Palace Ahead Of His Third Birthday)
The fear of people judging you on your condition makes it even more difficult to cope with it. But with the changing times and mindset of the people, individuals suffering from depression are coming out in open and are talking about their condition. Bollywood actors are also not far behind when it comes to discussing a serious topic like depression. In 2015, in an interview with NDTV, Deepika Padukone had put on a brave front and had opened up about her depression story and explained how she had fought with it. She had revealed that she had felt empty and directionless.

Deepika Padukone had started experiencing the symptoms of depression in mid-February 2014 while she was shooting for her movie and had fainted after a long day at work. The next day she had woken up with an empty feeling in her stomach and the urge to cry. Deepika, in a recent blog post for the New York Times, recalled her symptoms and how she had fought back with depression. She wrote, “I started experiencing symptoms in 2014. It was mid-February, and I had fainted after a long day of work. The next morning, I woke up with an empty feeling in my stomach and the urge to cry."
Deepika Padukone also recalled how she had felt depressed despite having a supporting family and a lovely boyfriend, Ranveer Singh by her side. She continued her blog post and wrote, “On paper, that should have been a great period in my life. I had just starred in four of my most memorable movies, my family was extremely supportive, and I was dating the man who would later become my husband. I had no reason to feel the way I did. But I did. I was exhausted and sad all the time. If someone played a happy song to cheer me up, it only made me feel worse. Waking up every day felt like a huge endeavour." For the duration of their stay, I put on a brave face. But as they packed their bags before heading to the airport, I broke down in tears. My mother looked at me and asked, “What’s wrong?” But I had no answer. She asked me if I was having issues at work. She asked if my partner and I were doing O.K. All I could do was shake my head. After taking a moment to herself, she said, “Deepika, I think you need professional help.”

Deepika Padukone, before tying the knot with Ranveer Singh, had dated him for six long years and it was during their courtship period that she was suffering from depression and he stood like a pillar of strength with her. In an interview with India Today, when Ranveer was asked how he had helped Deepika overcome depression, he had said, “Whoever is suffering from it, has to get over it themselves. It has to come from inside." Ranveer had added further that he had absolutely no qualms about waiting patiently while Deepika took her time to recover and had said, "That's okay. I had made up my mind a long time ago that she is the one for me. I was unfazed."
In an interview with the Hindustan Times, Ranveer Singh had revealed that he was in tears when he saw Deepika Padukone opening about her battle with depression on national television. He had also stated that Deepika has won him over for life. In his own words, “I was in tears when I watched her talking about it (her depression) on a TV chat show. It takes a lot of mental and emotional fortitude to come out with something that has such a large (social) stigma attached to it. Deepika has won me over for life with the kind of strength and courage she has. It’s incredible.” (Must Read: Arjun Kapoor And Janhvi Kapoor Twin In Blue And Strike For A Perfect Pose At 'Panipat' Screening)
