Dia Mirza has lived in our hearts rent-free ever since she starred in the film, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein in 2001. The cult film, starring R Madhavan and Dia Mirza as the leads, is returning to theatres after 23 years of its release. For the unversed, RHTDM marked Dia's acting debut, but the film tanked at the box office. Following this, the actress was dropped from many projects. Now, Dia spoke about how the growing popularity of her debut film among the audience.
In a new interview with The Times Of India, Dia Mirza recalled how the team reacted when the film, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, failed to impress the audience. Talking about it, the actress shared that they all were devastated, and she was even removed from many projects when RHTDM tanked at the box office. Dia said:
"We were all devastated! I remember being dropped from many projects."
However, the film gained popularity after it was screened on television, and many years later, it gained cult status due to the buzz around it on social media. Calling it a revelation, Dia mentioned how the audience continues to shower love on the 2001 film and shared how its recognition helped her understand that it connects with cinephiles. In her words:
"The film attained a cult status purely due to the extraordinary love the audience continues to give the film. It helped me discover how little box office matters to a film that genuinely connects with people. It's a gift that keeps giving."
In the same interview, the Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein actress opened up about her experience of working with R Madhavan and Saif Ali Khan in the film. Dia, who was a newcomer back then, found her mentor in Maddy, as he used to guide her on the set. She shared that her other co-star, Saif, would make her laugh on the sets and would put her at ease with his humour. She said:
"Maddy had already done the movie in the south (the Tamil film Minnale). He knew his character arc well. I often felt like he was a mentor on set, guiding, advising and generally being the gentleman he is. Today, we share a bond that has grown over the years. Saif was always making me laugh. I loved spending time with him. He instantly put me at ease with his candour and humour."
Directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, the film, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, was released in 2001. Now, it is all set to re-release on August 30, 2024. The romantic drama was the remake of Menon's Tamil film, Minnale, which also starred R Madhavan. While Madhavan played the role of 'Shastri' aka 'Maddy', Dia Mirza was cast as 'Reena Malhotra' in the film. On the other hand, Saif Ali Khan portrayed the character of 'Rajeev Samra' aka 'Sam'.
