Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu’s love story is one that could serve as inspiration for the greatest romance novels or films. Despite their 22-year age gap, the couple made their marriage work by standing by each other through thick and thin. However, that doesn’t mean everything was smooth sailing for the couple. Trouble first brewed for Dilip and Saira after 16 years of marriage when the former decided to get married for the second time to Asma Rehman. While the marriage was short-lived, Asma was subjected to a ton of scrutiny and criticism. So much so, that she decided to flee the country and move to Canada.
Asma Rehman once did an interview in Vancouver, Canada, in 1983, and the same has been reshared by the YouTube channel, ITMB Shows. In it, Asma, who hails from Pakistan, gets candid about the complete upheaval of her life after her marriage and divorce with Dilip Kumar.
According to Asma, the actor’s fans laid baseless allegations against her, and the media wouldn’t leave her alone. She further revealed that the situation remained the same no matter where she moved. Talking about how the intrusion affected her life, she said:
“What do I do? Even I don’t like it but what can one do about it? Even in India, the media was after my life and I thought it will be more peaceful in Vancouver but it feels like I am not meant to have peace.”
In the same interview, Asma was asked about her motivations for moving to Vancouver, Canada. She responded that she had done so for her family but also to get away from the media. Sadly, though, it seems Asma went through the same level of privacy, no matter where she went. She said:
“I feel there is a total lack of privacy no matter where I go. I really don’t like it.”

Asma Rehman also emphasised that 95 percent of stories involving her and her now-ex-husband, Dilip Kumar were entirely fabricated. According to her, her conversations with the actor had been ‘personal and private.’ Insisting that no one else was privy to their intimate talks, Asma said that whatever was written about them was a result of the media’s wild imagination. In her words:
“Conversations that take place between two people, which are personal and private in nature, how can anyone know about them? But these people’s imagination is just so wild that they just make up stories.”
For the unversed, Dilip Kumar had married Asma Rehman without letting his wife, Saira Banu know about it. And he had confessed to the same in his memoir, writing that he would never forgive himself for hurting Saira.
Dilip’s marriage with Asma was short-lived, lasting only three years. Following that, he returned to Saira and pleaded with her to let him undo the damage and ‘restore the sanctity’ of their marriage. And Saira stood by him like a rock through it all until he passed away in 2021.
What do you think about Dilip Kumar’s second wife, Asma Rehman’s revelations about how the media treated her?
