Abhishek Chaubey, known for his cinematic brilliance in films like Ishqiya and Udta Punjab, recently opened up about his unforgettable experience of working with Kareena Kapoor and Diljit Dosanjh in the 2016 blockbuster, Udta Punjab. In a recent interview, Chaubey revealed fascinating behind-the-scenes anecdotes, shedding light on the duo’s exceptional dedication and quirky habits on set.
Abhishek Chaubey recently shared his experience working with Kareena and Diljit in an interview with Mashable India. The director revealed that, unlike most actors who retreat to their vans or sit back after a shot, Kareena and Diljit had an entirely different approach. Abhishek shared:
“I will tell you something very interesting about Diljit and Kareena. They never sat on set. Usually, what happens after an actor gives his or her shot, they either return to their vanity or sit on the back with a book or so, but these two would never sit. These two would just follow me everywhere I go. Kareena is a superstar and yet she would always stand behind me and so did Diljit Dosanjh. I would ask him to sit, but he never would. I would shoot in various locations in the village and Kareena would always stand and watch.”
Kareena Kapoor Khan is an evergreen diva, known not only for her immaculate acting skills but also for her glamorous confidence. During the shooting of Udta Punjab, Kareena stunned Chaubey with her adaptability. For her role as a doctor battling Punjab's drug crisis, she willingly embraced a no-makeup look, something Chaubey initially struggled with. He recalled:
“There is this great thing about Kareena. She is a true blue industry kid and she has an instinctive understanding of the kind of film and the performance that is expected of her. There is no lack of skill and craft…She knew what kind of film we were making. She was aware of the kind of pitch that was needed for the performance. She wouldn’t put on makeup. I used to request her ‘thoda makeup karlo’, but she wouldn’t. She was amazing.”
Further in the conversation, Abhishek revealed that he had originally envisioned ‘Sartaj’, a cop caught in Punjab’s drug epidemic, as a towering and robust Punjabi man. However, Diljit Dosanjh’s unparalleled acting and authenticity as a Sardar earned him the part, despite not fitting the initial physical brief. The director shared:
“When we had conceived the character of Sartaj in Udta Punjab, he was supposed to be this mountain of a man. A proper 6 feet guy with a heavy voice. Typical Punjabi look. But when we did the casting, we cast Diljit Dosanjh, who looked nothing like we imagined for the character. But, he was a great actor. He is an actual Sardar.”
Released in 2016, Udta Punjab wasn’t just a gripping portrayal of Punjab’s drug crisis but also a testament to the power of dedicated storytelling and performances. Featuring Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, and Diljit Dosanjh, the film was both a critical and commercial success, earning over Rs 100 crore on a global scale.
