Esha Deol was one of the most anticipated star kids in the industry. She debuted as a lead actor in 2002 with Vinay Shukla's Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe. As the daughter of veteran Bollywood actress, Hema Malini and actor, Dharmendra, her debut grabbed many eyeballs. The film didn't perform well at the box office, but the then-new actress faced a lot more pressure than the film's performance. In a new interview, Esha recalled facing much pressure after her first film.
Every actor remembers their debut film experience, which gave them a way into showbiz, and so does Esha Deol. Recently, Esha sat down for an interview with Zoom and revealed the pressures she faced after her first film. She was expected to take ahead of her parents', and family's legacy in acting, and the actress was excited about her debut. Instead, Esha received overwhelming criticism as people compared her with her mother who had worked in over 200 films. She was quoted as saying:
"The pressure pump started after the films were released and things were written. Then I was like, they are comparing me in my first film to my mother, who has done 200 films."
The comments and reactions to Esha's first film didn't just end with comparisons. Despite being 18, she shared that people also commented about her weight, which she previously thought looked nice. In her words:
"And they would say a lot about my baby fat. 'Oh she has so much baby fat'. I had, I was 18, those cheeks were there. But they looked cute in those roles, the kind of roles that I did, I thought they looked nice."
In the same conversation, Esha shared that she had a conversation with her mom, Hema Malini, about the negative comments she received for her first film. She added that she didn't know how to handle it, and they began to affect her. However, at that point, Hema Malini asked her to rethink her decision to be an actor and its purpose. Consequently, she told Esha that if she had to join and work in showbiz, comments would be there, and the latter would have to learn to work without being affected. Esha said:
"Mom said 'just focus on the goal, this is going to be part of it, you are my daughter, there is going to be constant comparisons. If you are going to let it affect you, then you are in the wrong profession, if you can handle it, then continue.' So that was a golden tip that I got."
Esha Deol made her acting debut with the 2002 film, Koi Mere Dil Se Poochhe. She later starred in popular films like Dhoom, Dus, LOC: Kargil, No Entry, and more. She will next be seen in her Telugu debut film, Hero Herroine.
