Filmmaker, Farah Khan’s association with Bollywood’s incomparable superstar, Shah Rukh Khan goes a long way back. The duo’s equation has evolved from being a professional one, to that of friends-like family. For the unversed, Farah has not only directed Shah Rukh Khan in a number of films, but also has choreographed him for a number of performances. Even today, whenever the duo come across one another, what ensues is purely a laughing riot, as both Farah and SRK leave no stone unturned to pull each other’s legs. And recently, the choreographer-turned-filmmaker shared a few unknown anecdotes about him.
In a recent interview with Radio Nasha, Farah Khan recalled an anecdote about Shah Rukh Khan and mentioned how the actor wasn’t too sure about playing a college-going student in Karan Johar’s film, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. She mentioned that SRK felt to be too old to play such a part, as he was, by then, turned 30. Farah added:
“Shah Rukh ne mar mar ke Kuch Kuch Hota Hai kiya, he used to say I am too old to play this college boy and he was 30 that time!”

Moving forth in the conversation, Farah then mentioned that after Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’s release, she wanted to make college-based romcom, Main Hoon Na with Shah Rukh himself, which marked her directorial debut. However, since the actor had already shown apprehensions to play such young roles, Farah had to employ a different way to convince SRK to be a part of her film. In her words:
“After Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, I just wanted to make a young film. So I reverse engineered Main Hoon Na. I wanted to make a college film only with Shah Rukh. But why will Shah Rukh go to college, so the whole thing worked backwards. That if he has to go to college, he will go undercover. It started out as a small movie about Shah Rukh bursting a drug ring in the college, where his brother is also there and Shah Rukh he falls in love with the chemistry teacher. But while writing I kept feeling this is a bit small, and then the whole India-Pakistan, Project Milap, Raghavan (Suniel Shetty) bits kept adding and the film grew.”
In the concluding segment of the interview, Farah then talked about the time when she finally managed to narrate the script of Main Hoon Na to Shah Rukh Khan, after having convinced him for being a part of another college romance, with a twist of an undercover operation. Farah expressed that after hearing the script on a three-hour ride from London to Oxford, the actor not only agreed to be a part of the film, but also added that he would like to produce it as well. Adding how the final shooting of the movie took place three years later, Farah said:
“So he asked me to narrate the script in that three-hour drive. So, I did that–narrating from my handwritten script– and when we got down he said he will produce the film and he will star in it as well! But the shooting started after three years! But it’s ok, something’s are worth waiting for.”
