Addiction can be quite dangerous and damaging to one’s mental and physical health and subsequently to their life. Actor, Tom Holland, last seen in the thriller series, The Crowded Room, appeared on Jay Shetty’s podcast, revealing how he suffered from alcoholism and struggled to get rid of the addiction. He further added that now he has been sober for a year.
Tom further explained how difficult it is to remain sober and avoid addictions. However, Tom Holland is not the only celebrity who has come out in the open and accepted his addiction or even gotten rid of it. Some have bravely fought their addictions, completely gotten rid of them, and are now active advocates of addiction recovery. In contrast, others have struggled with addictions and ultimately succumbed to them. Here’s a list of celebrities who have suffered from addictions.

The Iron Man actor, in several instances, has accepted being under the influence of drugs all through his teen years. Robert was first introduced to marijuana when he was eight years old by his father. Ever since then, Robert has constantly used several other substances, such as cocaine, heroin and alcohol. He has even been arrested several times during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The Iron Man actor was imprisoned in California, where he had to undergo rehab. In July 2003, the actor announced that he had recovered from his addictions and was sober.
The Academy Award winner, Ben Affleck, has also had a history of substance abuse. Ben’s father was addicted to alcohol which impacted his life as well. He was deeply under the influence of alcohol until adulthood, after which he decided to seek help. He went to rehab in 2001 and came out clean. However, he later decided to drink in moderation, which went on for about eight years. In 2018, he had a divorce with Jennifer Garner owning to his alcohol problem, and he is currently getting on his way to recovery.

Demi Lovato is a famous singer whose career took off quite early in her life, as did her addiction problem. Demi used cocaine for the first time when she was seventeen years old and soon got addicted to it. She was sent to rehab for her cocaine addiction but was soon diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She came out clean from rehab, but soon, her addiction relapsed in 2018. During this time, she released her song, Sober, to let people know about her struggles with being sober. However, Demi continues to get help and is currently clean. She actively advocates against substance abuse and often encourages people to get help.

One of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, Bradley Cooper, struggled with substance abuse early in his career. Bradley himself spoke about how he struggled to hold on to his life amidst his addictions. In 2004, at the age of 29, Bradley decided to quit every kind of substance he was into and from then, there was no turning point for the actor.
The Harry Potter franchise star, Daniel Radcliffe, is another actor who had problems dealing with his increasing addictions. The star rose to stardom at a young age, and since then, he has faced quite a lot of difficulty in dealing with everything around him. Daniel said that he drank a lot during the last three movies of the franchise and soon he realised that it was a growing problem. He quit drinking soon after the last film wrapped and, since then, has been sober.
Matthew was leading America and the entire world with his sit-com Friends from 1994 to 2004, yet off-screen, he was battling alcoholism and prescribed drug usage disorder. The actor revealed that he got dependent on painkillers when he was prescribed to consume them after a watercraft mishap. The sitcom star soon sought help and ultimately recovered. Since then, he has been helping all those who deal with addictions and says helping others is his way of recovery. Unfortuntely, he passed away in 28 October 2023 allegedly after overdosing.

Marilyn Monroe was the star of the 50s and 60s. Growing up, she dealt with many physical ailments and suffered sexual abuse. To recover from those, her doctor prescribed her vodka. After getting success as a method actress, the star got professional help from a psychoanalyst who prescribed her medicine to get through the day and sleep at night. Monroe’s mental health was deteriorating with each passing day, and she was growing further dependent on medicines. On August 4, 1962, Monroe was found dead in her apartment due to a drug overdose.
Actor and model, Cara Delevingne has struggled with alcohol and substance abuse since she was young. She revealed in her interview with Vogue, that she first sneaked in alcohol at a family wedding when she was seven years old. She further said that her childhood trauma escalated her situation and made her an addict. She had a very public display of erratic behaviour at an airport in 2022. Upon realising the severity of her condition, the model got help and is now struggling to remain sober. Besides addiction, Cara has to deal with multiple mental and physical issues like insomnia, dyspraxia and more.
Addiction was a deep-rooted fight for the Star Wars actor, Carrie Fisher. She frequently talked about her struggle with alcohol and drug abuse. She further discussed how difficult the path to recovery was. She struggled with addiction and had to deal with her bipolar disorder. Fisher passed away in 2016 at the age of 60 on a flight to trans-Atlantic.
The English comedian got into the usage of alcohol and heroin at the age of 19. Ever since then, he has struggled to get out of the hold of substance abuse. He said that he immediately felt at ease whenever he used drugs, which aggravated his addiction. He continued his addiction tendencies for 15 years before it blew up in his face in 2003. After his ultimate breakdown, he registered himself in rehab and got the needed help. As of now, the actor-comedian has been sober for the last 17 years.
