Gadar: Ek Prem Katha was released on June 15, 2001, and even after 22 years of its magnanimous success, it still has a special place in the heart of every cinema lover. The 3 hours 5 minutes, long movie is still considered as one of the best Indian films ever made. The iconic movie was directed by Anil Sharma, and Shaktiman Talwar wrote the story.

The film starred renowned actors like Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel, Amrish Puri, Lilette Dubey, Vivek Shauq, Suresh Oberoi, Utkarsh Sharma, and many others. Made on a budget of just Rs. 18 crores, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha broke all the box-office records and did a business of Rs. 140 crores. However, the movie was re-released, and its adjusted gross was around Rs. 500 crores.

There’s no denying that Sunny Deol did the utmost justice to the lead character, ‘Tara Singh’ in the film, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. However, little did everyone know that before casting Sunny Deol, the film’s director, Anil Sharma reportedly approached Govinda for the role. But after his film, Maharaja flopped at the box office, Anil changed his mind and went on to cast Sunny in the film.

For the female lead character, ‘Sakeena’, Anil Sharma approached Kajol, but because of date issues, she couldn’t be a part of the film. After which, the filmmaker auditioned 500 girls, out of which Ameesha Patel was the one, who grabbed the lead role in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.

#3. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha was loosely based on the life of Boota Singh

Not everyone is aware of the fact that Anil Sharma’s film, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha was inspired by the life of ex-soldier of the British Army, Boota Singh. The soldier fell in love with a Muslim girl named, Zainab, whom he had rescued during the communal riots. They got married and welcomed a baby girl into their lives.

However, after the partition was officially announced, Zainab was sent to Pakistan, and as it was shown in the film, Boota Singh went to Pakistan to take her. Unfortunately, due to her family’s pressure, Zainab ended her marriage with Boota Singh, after which the latter committed suicide. The ex-soldier jumped in front of a moving train with his daughter. While he was dead, his daughter survived.
