Never for a second in Ashutosh Gowariker’s Swades, it looked like it was Gayatri Joshi’s debut film, as she was so natural throughout the film. However, as everyone knows, she left acting despite having a dream debut opposite Bollywood superstar, Shah Rukh Khan.

Former actress, Gayatri Joshi was born on March 20, 1974, in Nagpur, Maharashtra. She belongs to a Marathi-speaking Joshi family. Gayatri’s father’s name is Ramniwas Runthala, and her mother’s name is Hema Milani. She also has a sister named Ahana Joshi. Talking about Gayatri Joshi’s educational background, she completed her schooling at Mount Carmel High School and J.B. Vachha High School. After which, she went to Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, where she attained a Bachelor of Commerce degree.
Post completing her education, Gayatri Joshi kick-started her career by working as a video jockey for Channel V, which was quite popular back in the day. However, she soon left her first job as a video jockey and went on to pursue her dream of becoming a professional model.
The former actress participated in the 1999 Femina Miss India beauty pageant and ended up in the top 5. However, she won the 2000 Femina Miss India International.
After winning the beauty pageant, Gayatri Joshi started getting a lot of brand endorsements. She appeared in so many commercials of the big brands that, include the likes of Bombay Dyeing, Godrej, Sunsilk, Philips, Pond's, LG, Hyundai, and many more. During her modelling career, she also worked with Shah Rukh Khan in a commercial, and it grabbed the attention of many renowned filmmakers.
Apart from being featured in so many brand commercials, Gayatri Joshi also modelled for the Calender and Seasons Catalogue back in 2001. It was at that moment when Gayatri was noticed by iconic filmmaker, Ashutosh Gowarikar, who cast her in his film, Swades, opposite Shah Rukh Khan. The film was a commercial failure but is still considered a cult classic.

Not just Shah Rukh Khan’s acting, even the debutant, Gayatri Joshi also won a series of awards for her acting debut in Bollywood. The actress had a dream debut, and the stakes were high that she would rule the industry with her work. However, things didn’t go as everyone planned or wished as Gayatri left acting soon, and Swades became her first and last film.
The entire industry was in absolute shock when Gayatri Joshi bid farewell to Hindi cinema despite having a tremendous debut with Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Swades. The actress didn’t reveal the exact reason behind it for some time. However, it was in 2019 when in an interview, Gayatri opened up about leaving Bollywood despite winning a series of accolades and awards for her acting performance in Swades opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
Sharing the main reason behind it, Gayatri Joshi admitted that she never pre-planned leaving acting after Swades and was open to hearing scripts. However, the kind of script she was getting wasn’t what she wanted to do. The former actress added that things didn’t go as planned, so she preferred to leave acting.

After leaving acting and saying goodbye to Bollywood, Gayatri Joshi got married to famous billionaire, Vikas Oberoi. On August 27, 2005, Gayatri got married to renowned industrialist, Vikas.
The couple has two sons, Vihaan and Yuva. After her marriage with Vikas, once in an interview, Gayatri shared that after her marriage, she left acting because she wanted to dedicate her life to her family and children.
Swades fame, Gayatri Joshi is happily married to renowned industrialist, Vikas Oberoi. For the unversed, Vikas Oberoi is the Chairman and Managing Director of Oberoi Realty Limited.
