One of the two biggest superstars of their time, Hema Malini and Dharmendra need no introduction. The iconic pair fell in love with each other while they were shooting for the film, Tum Haseen Main Jawaan back in 1970. Despite knowing the fact that Dharmendra was already married to his first wife, Prakash Kaur, the lovebirds couldn’t hold on to their feelings. After Dharmendra’s first wife refused to divorce him, the actor reportedly converted to Islam to marry Hema Malini.
As per a report in The Times Of India, Dharmendra opted for the name, Dilawar Khan Kewal Krishn, while Hema Malini changed her name to Aisha Bi R Chakravarty in order to get married to each other. It was on May 2, 1980, when Dharmendra and Hema got married in a private wedding ceremony. Soon the much-in-love couple welcomed two daughters, Esha Deol Takhtani and Ahana Deol Vohra, into their lives.

In a heart-to-heart conversation with the Bombay Times, Hema Malini opened up about her marriage with Dharmendra. The doting wife explained that love is the kind of thing that gives her the courage to make unconventional choices in her life. Hema further explained how she would have been ‘nothing’ if she had not gone for an unconventional wedding with her forever love, Dharmendra.
The actress shared that she always lived an unconventional life, allowing her to act and dance in films and events, enter politics, and do everything she ever wanted to do. The actress also hinted at how the unconventional nature of her life transformed her to be brave enough to fight for the things she wishes to have in her life. In her words:
"If my marriage had been a conventional one, I think I would have been a nobody. Today, I am doing all this, films, dance, going to places for talks, being in politics, itna sab kuch kaise hota if it was a conventional life."

Further, in the same interview, Hema Malini was asked to reveal the secret behind her longevity in the film industry. The ‘Dream Girl’ has been working in the Hindi film industry for the last 60 years. Revealing the secret behind it, Hema revealed that it is her husband, Dharmendra, who always encouraged her to work in films. Even after the birth of their kids, the doting husband didn’t advise her to stop working.
Sharing how Dharmendra never interfered in her professional career, Hema Malini also admitted that she cannot stop working because it always teaches her something new. For the unversed, despite getting married, Hema Malini was one of the leading actresses in Hindi cinema. From working with numerous A-listed actors to featuring in a series of big-budget films, she is still admired for how she didn’t let her marriage come between her profession. Returning to Hema Malini’s take on Dharmendra’s support throughout her career. She said:
"I have been working for so many years now ki ab main chup chaap nahin beth sakti. I kept working even after my marriage and kids, all thanks to Dharam ji. He never interfered in my work at all."
