Questions: Wedding makes it compulsory that we get a designer outfit. But for my May wedding next year I want a touch of me in my attire. I want my wedding dress to be custom made. With a hint of flowery attributes, it will also have shiny thread embroidery and designs selected by me. However, my friends say that getting a tailor-made dress is not a good idea. Some of them are of the view that it may be a bad omen for my wedding. Now I am at my wit’s end as to whether to go for custom-made dress or for something tried and tested. Please help.
Answer: First, throw away the notion out of the window that wearing a custom-made dress is a bad omen. It certainly isn’t. There is no harm or sin to wear wedding attire that has a hint of you in it. So relax. Also, getting a custom made dress needs similar precision as buying something out of the stack.

Now, since you very well know what you want, make a sketch of it. You don’t have to be an artist for that. A rough sketch of the costume would be great. Be very detailed in it. You should be sure that the dress on the paper is the one you want.
Look out for an expert seamstress or tailor in your area. It might be possible that the same person won’t be skilled enough for both designing and sewing, be sure to enquire beforehand. Meet with all the probable candidates and run through their works. Also ask them to give ideas of their own. You never know, one of their ideas might fit your desires! However, as a personal advice, we would say do look out for references from your family or friends. It comes in handy when you go out looking for a good tailor.
It is important for you to know that making a dress from scratch is an expensive proposition. If you are game for the amount, just go ahead and embody yourself in your wedding dress!
