Anubhav Sinha's web series, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack grabbed a whole lot of attention in the last few days for several reasons. The cast aced in their roles and won the hearts of the audience. However, the Netflix representatives were summoned by the Government for meddling with the facts in the series. Well, the release of the series yet again made the horror of that week-long ordeal afresh in people's minds. It was in 1999 when the Indian flight, IC 814 was hijacked by Pakistani terrorists.
Well, in a recent interview on Netfilx's YouTube channel, the real captain of that flight, Devi Sharan shared some unheard anecdotes from those days of terror. Vijay Varma, who played the role of 'Devi Sharan' in the series, IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, took an interview with the real captain, Sharan. Talking about the most frightening hijacker, Sharan said that it was Shankar who was most dangerous and looked like he could kill anyone anytime. Captain Sharan also added that one of the hijackers, Burger was working as a PR. Sharing how Burger was working, Sharan said:

"He was functioning as a PR. For instance, if one hijacker hit a passenger, then he would come in between and would make both the hijacker and the passenger understand. He and I shared a certain wavelength. Like if I had to communicate something, I would approach him and he was always ready.”
In the same interview, Captain Devi Sharan was asked if he had interacted with the passengers when the flight was hijacked. To this, he shared that after 1-2 days, he was allowed to sit with the passengers. Sharing deets about the conversation he had with the passengers, Devi Sharan revealed that he would talk to the passengers in instalments and would explain to them how to open the gates in case the hijackers would start firing inside of the flight. The captain of IC 814 also remarked that the hijackers never knew that he was talking to the passengers.
Going forward in the interview, Devi Sharan mentioned that the chief hijacker cried on the last day by hugging him. For the unversed, the Pakistani hijackers demanded the release of their militants from the Indian Government. Well, one of these militants, was the chief hijacker's brother. Sharan also revealed that the chief hijacker asked him what was his brother’s fault. Sharan stated that the chief hijacker had been a very emotional guy but was strict about what they wanted. Devi Sharan can be quoted as saying:
"They didn’t get everything they wanted during the negotiations. Our negotiators kept working day and night for 3-4 days that definitely affected them. The chief hijacker on the 5 or 6th day hugged me and cried. Now everybody knows that the one person they demanded to be released from jail in India was the brother of the chief hijacker. He told me, ‘What’s my brother’s fault?’ You can understand that he needn’t cry in front of me. He was a very emotional guy that way. But they also knew that they had to get their work done and they were firm about it.”
For the unversed, businessman, Rupin Katyal was brutally killed by the terrorists. Well, his then-newlywed wife, Rachna had no idea about the same. After killing Rupin, the terrorists avoided Rachna for two days, and on the third day, Burger came and asked her to consider him as his brother. He also told Rachna to be happy as her husband was sound and safe.
