It was in 2018 when the entire world went in for a momentary shock when Irrfan Khan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour, and he had flown to London for treatment. Irrfan returned to India a few days back and nothing else could have made his fans happier than the Hindi Medium star returning to the bay, all hale and hearty. Irrfan had tweeted about his "rare disease" and described his feeling of living a "mystery story" due to his health.

Irrfan Khan had tweeted, "Sometimes you wake up with a jolt with life-shaking you up. The last fifteen days, my life has been a suspense story. Little had I known that my search for rare stories would make me find a rare disease. I have never given up and have always fought for my choices and always will. My family and friends are with me and we are working it out the best way possible. In trying times, please don't speculate as I will myself share with you my story within a week - ten days when the further investigations come with a conclusive diagnosis. Till then, wish the best for me! – Irrfan”
After struggling with his health, Irrfan Khan came back to Mumbai in mid-March and has already begun shooting for his next film, Angrezi Medium. His wife, Sutapa Sikdar penned down a heartfelt letter about the ‘longest year’ of their lives and thanked her husband’s fans, friends and family who have been praying for his recovery. The mind behind Madaari and Qarib Qarib Singlle, Sutapa wrote, “Longest year of our life. Time was never measured with pain and hope at the same time ever. While we take our babysteps back to work, to life I am submerged in prayers wishes and faith from friends relatives strangers and a connection with universe which gives us a small chance for this new start.”
Sutapa Sikdar’s note further stated, “It seems unbelievable …never ever I realized the meaning of the word unpredictable so well…never ever I could feel peoples wishes on my bones my breath my heartbeat which helped me to stay focused and kicking.. I can’t take names because there are names and there are names I don’t even know who played angels. Sorry for not been able to answer individually but I know what you mean to us. I don’t see beyond one day and that day is today where everything seems fine. For today we go back to work, and the dance and song of life continues. Back in 2018 when the conjectures were doing the rounds in media about Irrfan Khan’s ‘rare disease’, many speculations suggested that he was suffering from brain cancer. And amidst all such reports, Irrfan Khan’s wife, Sutapa Sikdar requested everyone to stop speculating about his disease and said that her husband is fighting his illness like a warrior. She had written, “My best friend and my partner is a ‘warrior’ he is fighting every obstacle with tremendous grace and beauty. I apologize for not answering calls msgs, but I want all of you to know I am truly humbled indebted forever for the wishes prayers and concern from all over the world. I am grateful to God and my partner for making me a warrior too. I am at present focused on the strategies of the battlefield which I have to conquer.”
Sutapa Sikdar’s note further stated, “It wasn’t and isn’t and is not going to be easy, but the hope ignited by the magnitude of family, friends and fans of Irrfan has made me only optimistic and almost sure of the victory. I know curiosity germinates from concern but let’s turn our curiosity from what it is to what it should be. Let’s change the leaf. Let’s not waste our precious energies to only know what it is and just pray to make it what it should be. My humble request to all of you is to concentrate on the song of life, to dance of life to victory. My family will soon join in this dance of life. Thank you all from bottom of our heart - Sutapa irrfan babil ayaan.”
After returning back to the bay, Irrfan Khan shared a moving message on Twitter, expressing his gratitude and thanked his fans for their love and support. The Lunchbox star wrote, "Maybe somewhere in the pursuit of winning, we forget how much it means to be loved. In our vulnerability, we are reminded. As I leave my footprints onto these steps of my life, I want to pause to be grateful for receiving your immense love and support, it soothed me in my process of healing. So I travel back to you, thanking you from the bottom of my heart."
On March 2018, Irrfan Khan had confirmed that he was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour, and wrote in his tweet, “Life is under no obligation to give us what we expect: Margaret Mitchell. The unexpected makes us grow, which is what the past few days have been about. Learning that I have been diagnosed with NeuroEndocrine Tumour as of now has now has admittedly been difficult, but the love and strength of those around me and that I found within me has brought me to a place of hope. The journey of this is taking me out of the country, and I request everyone to continue sending their wishes.
