Jyotika Says She Left Bollywood After Her Debut Film Flopped, Adds Why Southern Industry Is Better

Jyotika started her career in the Indian film industry with the Hindi film, Doli Saja Ke Rakhna, which starred Akshaye Khanna as the male lead. The 1997 film tanked at the box office, and eventually, the actress shifted her base to South India to work in the regional film industry. However, Jyotika made a comeback in Bollywood after 27 years with Shaitaan, co-starring Ajay Devgn and R. Madhavan.

Jyotika says she drifted to the South Indian film industry as her first Hindi film did not work well

Recently, while conversing with News18 Showsha, Jyotika spoke at length about the time she was missing from Bollywood and revealed the reason behind the same. She mentioned that the first film needs to run well at the box office in Bollywood to get the next offers. In her words:

“I didn’t receive an offer from Hindi films even once. I drifted into South films 27 years ago and have only worked in South films ever since. My first Hindi film didn’t run well in theatres. It’s all very formula-based. Your first film needs to run for you to get more offers.”

During the conversation, Jyotika recalled how she faced tough competition from her peers, who started around the same time as hers and were working with big production houses. The actress shared that her film, too, was produced by a big banner, but destiny had other plans, and she had to leave Bollywood. Jyotika added:

“When I had started my career, there was an entire bandwagon of girls working with big production houses. Even my film was produced by a big banner, but as fate would have it, it didn’t run. Luckily, I had signed a south film and diverted from Bollywood.”

Jyotika highlights the difference between Bollywood and the South Indian film industry

Jyotika further highlighted the stark difference between Bollywood and the South Indian film industry. She said that although her debut film in the regional film industry did not do well, she received subsequent offers based on her performance in the film, unlike Bollywood. The actress also mentioned that when she got married to the South Indian superstar Suriya in 2006, many from the Hindi film industry thought that she left Bollywood for good. In her words:

“People in Bollywood also thought that I was a South Indian and they assumed that I don’t want to do Hindi films anymore. It was a journey, and I’m still grateful about it. I did some fabulous work there. It’s not like I refrained from doing a Hindi film. It’s just that I wasn’t offered any script in so many years.”

Jyotika will be seen in Srikanth

Jyotika made a comeback in the Hindi film industry with Shaitaan and will next be seen in Srikanth, co-starring Rajkummar Rao, Alaya F, and Sharad Kelkar in pivotal roles. The film will release in theatres on May 10, 2024. In the same interview, Jyotika said that she’s grateful that she could restart her career in Bollywood with a film that is based on a person from South India. She started filming for Srikanth before Shaitaan and recalled that she had to pinch herself to remember that she was back in Bollywood.
