Kamal Sadanah was hailed as one of the most promising actors back in the '90s. He starred in some iconic films, including Bekhudi, Rang, Baali Umar Ko Salaam, Rock Dancer amongst others. Kamal rose to prominence with his exceptional on-screen chemistry with two of his co-actresses, Kajol and Divya Bharti. He was last seen on-screen in 2023, in the film, Pippa. Unlike his professional life, his personal life has been no less than a tragedy. He lost his entire family right before his eyes, on exactly his 20th birthday. And recently, the actor recalled about those past horrors of his life.
For the unversed, Kamal Sadanah is the son of filmmaker and producer, Brij Sadanah. Back on October 21, 1990, the actor turned all but 20 and his family arranged for a party. However, amidst being busy with all the planning, Kamal heard gunshots on the lower floor of his house, that startled him. When he rushed downstairs, he witnessed the most gruesome massacre, as his father had shot dead his mother, Sayeeda Khan and his sister, Namrata. Reportedly, Brij Sadanah had a massive fight with his wife, and in a drunken state, he shot her and their daughter. While the sight was indeed shocking, Kamal’s father then shot him too, post which he fainted. Upon regaining consciousness, Kamal realised that his mother and sister were dead, his father, too, on the other hand, had committed suicide.

In a recent interaction with Siddharth Kannan, Kamal Sadanah remembered those horrific times and revealed that it was quite shocking for him to survive, since a bullet had been fired on him too. The actor stated that the bullet hit him on one side of his neck, and came out from the other side, and evidently didn’t cause him any harm. Stating how such a thing doesn’t carry any logical reason, Kamal said:
“It is traumatic. To see your family being killed in front of your eyes is…I was also shot. I had a bullet go from one side of neck and come out from the other side. I have survived there. And there is no reason. There is no logical reason for me to survive. It's almost as if the bullet dodged every nerve and came out from the other side. And I survived without any problems. No physical problems.”
Moving forth in the conversation, Kamal Sadanah talked about that dreadful day and mentioned that he took both his mother and sister to the hospital in a frantic state, since they were profusely bleeding after getting shot. He added that amid such a situation, he never realised that he too had been shot, until a doctor pointed out to him. In his words:
“I had to carry my mother and my sister to the hospital while they were bleeding. Aur us waqt mujhe pta nahi tha ki mujhe bhi goli lagi thi. To doctor ne bola ki, ‘tumhari shirt par itna khun kyu hai?' said, ‘No, it must be from my mother or sister. He said, ‘No, you have been shot. We don't have enough place over here. You have to go to another hospital.' I was like, ‘No, you just keep my mother and sister alive. And I also was trying to check on my father what he was going to be doing at that point.”

After being pointed out by the doctor, Kamal Sadanah revealed that he was taken to a different hospital by one of his friends, where they gave him anaesthesia to clean up the gun wound he had. However, a more tragic fate awaited him still, as once he regained consciousness, he realised that he had lost his entire family. While his mother and sister had succumbed to the gun shots, his father too had committed suicide out of guilt for his actions. Kamal expressed the immense pain he felt on seeing his whole family lying dead in front of him, that too on his birthday.

In the concluding note of the interaction, Kamal Sadanah divulged whether he celebrates his birthday nowadays, considering that the day has been testimony of one of the most shocking moments of his life. The actor revealed that while initially, he didn’t want to celebrate the day, it has been but a few years when he organises a small party with a handful of friends and his children to mark the day. In his words:
“Shuru-shuru mein nahi karta tha. In fact, I still don't do it. But, every year, my friends are just lined up. Last year or year before last, I actually said, ‘I'm going to have a small party'. And both my children were there. It was nice.”
