Star Filmmaker, Atlee made an appearance as a guest on Kapil Sharma's comedy show, The Great Indian Kapil Show. The director had made an appearance on the show with the entire star cast of his upcoming film, Baby John. However, Kapil made a joke that did not sit well with the viewers and sparked a controversy.
Many viewers questioned whether the comedian, Kapil Sharma, had tried to take a derogatory jab at filmmaker Atlee's appearance. Now, singer, Chinmayi Sripaada has also weighed in on the incident. She had criticised Kapil for allegedly making a joke about Atlee's skin colour. For the unversed, Atlee had joined the grand finale episode of The Great Indian Kapil Show Season 2 with the film’s team, including Varun Dhawan, Keerthy Suresh and Wamiqa Gabbi.
As soon as the video from the show surfaced on the internet, Kapil Sharma faced severe backlash for his remarks. The clip also reached the singer, Chinmayi Sripaada, and she was not pleased with the joke either and did not hold back while calling Kapil out for his joke. She took to her X account and shared a tweet. She reposted the clip and captioned it:
"Will they never stop these crass and racist jibes at his skin colour in the name of 'comedy?' Someone with the amount of influence and clout like Kapil Sharma saying something like this is disappointing and, unfortunately, not surprising."
The Great Indian Kapil Show, aired its finale on December 15, 2024. While some conversations touched our hearts, there was one incident that hurt the viewers. During the conversation, Kapil Sharma subtly made a joke about Atlee, which didn’t go down as he had hoped, and a section of social media called it racist. In the said conversation, Kapil was heard asking Atlee, "When you get to meet a star for the first time, do they ask, where is Atlee?" Atlee responded to Kapil and said:
"In a way I understood your question. I’ll try to answer. I’m actually very thankful to AR Murugadoss sir because he produced my first film. He asked for a script, but he didn’t see how I was looking or whether I’m capable of it or not. But, he loved my narration. I think the world should see that. We should not judge by appearance. You have to judge by your heart."
Many of the filmmaker, Atlee's fans, have come forward to show their dismay at the joke Kapil Sharma made. One X user commented, "I watched this episode this afternoon. I was thinking the same. Maybe his intention was not that, but then he should have framed the question in a much, much better way. But all in all, he is a champion of body shaming, so not surprising at all." Another upset fan commented:

"Kapil Sharma may be a nice person otherwise, but he makes racist/sexist/body shaming/homophobic jokes all the time on his show. His silly question to Atlee reflects the fair-skin colour obsession of North Indians."
