Karan Johar Shares His Father Was Treated Indifferently Once Latter's Films Flopped, 'I Saw Pain...'

Karan Johar revealed that the industry people treated his father and their family differently once the latter's films started tanking at the box office.

Indian director and producer, Karan Johar is one of the prominent names in the film industry. The 52-year-old has garnered limelight repeatedly, either for his controversial show, Koffee With Karan or for his blunt and bold statements. Recently, the filmmaker talked about some emotional and funny anecdotes from his life.

Karan Johar shares his father was treated indifferently once his films tanked at the box office

Karan Johar appeared on the first episode of comedian, Zakir Khan's new show, Aapka Apna Zakir, and recalled the time his father, Yash Johar, hit a rough patch in his career. When the host asked the filmmaker if he ever felt that all his films would succeed at the box office, Karan said that he never felt that confident, and was significantly worried about incurring losses.

Karan further said that he is a producer's son, who was a production controller for 30 years. The filmmaker shared that his father took out a heavy loan to make 1980's Dostana, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha, which worked well. However, his consecutive films tanked at the box office. Karan was quoted as saying:

"I never felt that I have killed it or my film will do wonders at the box office. I feel like I will incur losses and I will come on the streets; because I am a producer’s son. My father was a production controller for 30 years and when he produced his first film, he took a very heavy loan to make Dostana, and the film worked. But after that when he made many other films and they all flopped."

Karan Johar regrets that his father couldn't see the success of Dharma Productions

Continuing his chain of thoughts, the Student Of The Year director revealed how the people in the industry treated them differently after Yash Johar's series of flops. He shared that they would be invited to film premieres and would be given very substandard seats. Sharing that his father wouldn't go to such premieres, Karan added:

"When movies don’t do well, the industry reacts differently. We were invited to premieres but were given very substandard seats. Dad wouldn’t go, but he would ask me to go. And I saw that pain in his eyes of why was he invited when he couldn’t be respected. Failure is a bitter pill to swallow."

Meanwhile, Karan also highlighted that he would always regret that his father, Yash Johar couldn't see the success of his production company, Dharma Productions. Sharing that his father left the world too soon, Karan added that Yash Johar could only see 5 to 6 years of his journey in the industry. He was quoted as saying:

"When films flop you get tagged, your failure is announced to the world and it was tough to see him go through that. He would have been very happy to see Dharma today. I feel sad that he left us very soon; he only saw 5-6 years of my journey. That is my biggest regret that he wasn’t around when Dharma was in its best phase."

When Karan Johar expressed his desire to try acting once more

After years of hard work and toil, Karan Johar's Dharma Productions is so highly regarded that every newcomer dreams of working for the production house. Apart from successfully running Dharma, the filmmaker has ventured into the industry as an actor. He made his acting debut with the 2015 film Bombay Velvet, but the movie failed to leave an indelible impression on the audience.

However, this did not deter Karan from trying his hands in acting once more. Previously, during an interaction with Suchitra Tyagi, he shared that he was ready to come in front of the camera once again. He revealed that he can go to any lengths to prove his mettle in acting. Karan was quoted as saying:

"As long as it's a meaty part, a ‘supporting' part, a ‘character artist' part, I'll do it."
