Kareena Kapoor has been one of the most-loved divas in Bollywood. She has won hearts with both her acting mettle and mesmerising beauty. In her personal life, she tied the knot with actor, Saif Ali Khan in 2012. For the unversed, Kareena had fallen in love with Saif while doing their film, Tashan together, and in fact, became Saif’s second wife, after the latter’s broken marriage with ex-wife, Amrita Singh.
The wedding of Kareena and Saif was befitting to that of any royal family as indeed, Kareena became the begum of the Nawab of Pataudi. While the pictures and videos from their wedding still hold a special place in the hearts of their fans, it was Kareena’s outfit which had set a class-apart standard in the history of bridal fashion. Well, in one of the royal portraits of the then newly-wedded Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, the former was seen donning a rust-hued sharara paired with a matching tissue kurta and a dupatta that featured heavy embroidery in gold. Incidentally, the outfit was passed onto Kareena by her mother-in-law, Sharmila Tagore, who had worn it herself on the day of her wedding with Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. It was Kareena’s favourite designers, Ritu Kumar and Manish Malhotra, who had gracefully revived the same outfit for Bebo.

Interestingly, the outfit worn by Kareena at her wedding did not originally belong to her mother-in-law, Sharmila Tagore as well. It was an heirloom garment that was originally passed down from Sharmila’s husband, Mansoor Ali Khan’s mother, Begum Sajida Sultan of Bhopal. Details about the same was shared by Kareena’s elder sister-in-law, Saba Ali Pataudi, who in one of her posts featuring Kareena’s wedding pictures and those of her mother, Sharmila Tagore, during her wedding in the same outfit. She had penned the caption as:
“Begum Sajida Sultan My grandmother. #mutawalli #respect #wedding #outfit #tradition #passed #down #bhopal #royal #family”, “Tradition... passed on to the next generation. #royal #wedding #outfit #begumofpataudi #tradition #bhopal #married #to #late #nawab #mansuralikhan #pataudi” and “MAHSHALLAH. Generation and tradition continued. #begumofpataudi #kareenakapoorkhan #wedding #gharara #old #tradition #nawabofpataudi #saifalikhan.”

A few years after Kareena and Saif’s wedding, it was the former’s wedding designer, Ritu Kumar, who had shared a picture of Sharmila Tagore’s mother-in-law, Begum Sajida Sultan donning the same outfit which Kareena had ended up wearing on her wedding. Along with it, she also listed some intricate details about the heritage outfit, which could be read as:
“Sajida Sultan was the begum of Iftikhar Ali Khan, 8th Nawab of Pataudi and, in her own right, the 12th (and last, titular) Nawab Begum of Bhopal. Her three-piece ensemble in gold tissue has intricate gota work and zardozi details on the border and neckline. This antique couture masterpiece has been passed down the generations in the family.”

While Kareena may have ditched any other designer outfit for her wedding and had chosen to wear the one which was worn by her mother-in-law, nevertheless, there was an added task of revamping the old piece of work so that Kareena could wear it comfortably. For this special task, Kareena had trusted eminent designer, Ritu Kumar who had magically revived the same with her expertise. In an interview with Vogue Magazine, Ritu had once opened up the difficult yet minuscule task of reviving the piece and had mentioned:
“Kareena’s antique heirloom was a Bhopali joda, which originally belonged to Sharmila Tagore’s mother-in-law Begum of Bhopal, who belonged to the royal family of Bhopal. The joda had to be revived and restyled in a way that it would fit into the aesthetics of today without losing its intrinsic quality. It took six months to conceive and recreate the odhni and the outfit. The outfit was a divided sharara with a long tail, which needed two people to hold from the back while walking. The tail was made shorter so that Kareena was comfortable and could walk with ease.”
Sharmila Tagore is known to have been sharing a great bond with her daughter-in-law, Kareena Kapoor Khan. She is quite fond of her and on various occasions, she has been spotted heaping praises on the latter. Moreover, Kareena too looks up to Sharmila as a living inspiration, thereby proving saas-bahu goals. Since Kareena and Sharmila have the attribute of being actors as a common factor, their fans always anticipate the duo coming together for a film. And Sharmila, too, once spoke about the same and had revealed:
“You know the audience is very wild. They want to see a good film at the end of the day. If the collaboration happens organically then that’s a good thing, but nobody can force these things. Kareena is working on a lovely film. I’m very happy about that because this is the first shoot happening after the lockdown and Saif has just finished another film. So, we are all a family of working actors, and we all enjoy our work. I did this and I enjoyed it. Now let’s see how it’ll be and we will take it from there."
